The NCAA’s Board of Governors is supporting altered rule changes to allow student-athletes to “receive compensation for third-party endorsements both related to and separate from athletics.” The NCAA’s three divisions are expected to adopt the new policy by January of next year in order for the rules to take effect at the start of the 2021-22 academic year. In addition, the NCAA also supports compensation for other student-athlete opportunities — such as social media followings — and business ventures. According to the NCAA, “student-athletes would be permitted to identify themselves by sport and school, the use of conference and school logos, trademarks or other involvement would not be allowed.” In October 2019, the Board of Governors voted unanimously “to permit students participating in athletics the opportunity to benefit from the use of their name, image and likeness in a manner consistent with the collegiate model.”
