LINCOLN, Neb. (KGFW) – A Lincoln Police officer shot while attempting to make a warrant arrest in connection with a March homicide has died from his injuries.
LPD tweeted, “Investigator Mario Herrera has succumbed to his injuries. Despite skilled & determined medical care, as well as the thoughts, prayers, & support of his family, friends & community, his valiant fight ended as he passed away in the early morning hours of September 7th, 2020.”
The Nebraska State Patrol also issued a statement after learning that Investigator Herrera passed away early Monday morning.
“Nebraska’s law enforcement family has suffered a tragic loss today,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “We send our deepest condolences to Investigator Herrera’s family and friends, along with the entire Lincoln Police Department and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Our troopers were honored to work beside Mario, and will forever remember his service and sacrifice.”
Governor Pete Ricketts has ordered flags to fly at half-staff.
“Susanne and I were devastated to learn of the passing of Investigator Mario Herrera,” said Gov. Ricketts. “Investigator Herrera’s service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. I also want to thank people across the state who stepped up to support the Herrera family in the midst of this terrible tragedy. From holding prayer vigils to donating blood, the community’s response was powerful and inspiring. Now more than ever, it is critical for all of us to come together and support the men and women who put on the uniform and risk their lives every day to help keep our communities safe.”
Flags will immediately fly at half-staff until sunset September 11, 2020 – Patriot Day. Flags at half-staff Friday will also honor victims of the 9/11 terror attacks.
Investigator Herrera was shot while attempting to apprehend 17-year-old Felipe Vazquez on August 26. Vazquez was wanted for second-degree assault in the murder of Edward Varejcka. Vazquez was caught after a manhunt. 19-year-old Orion Ross was also arrested. Both were charged with escape. Their bonds were set $1 million. At the time, authorities said additional charges were pending.
