The Nebraska baseball team is the No. 2 seed at the Fayetteville NCAA Regional in Arkansas and will play No. 3 seed Northeastern Friday at 7:00. It’s the Huskers’ 17th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, and their 14th in the last 21 seasons. This will be the first-ever meeting between Nebraska and Northeastern. The Huskies won the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title. The Arkansas Razorbacks are the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed and will play No. 4 seed the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders in the opening round of the four-team, double-elimination regional.
The Big Ten Conference released its end of season awards Sunday, and the Huskers captured three of the league’s major awards. Junior infielder/right-handed pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach became the first Husker baseball player to be named Big Ten Player of the Year, Max Anderson was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Will Bolt was tabbed as Big Ten Coach of the Year. In addition to the three award winners, Nebraska had four first-team All-Big Ten honorees, its most in a single season since joining the Big Ten. Joining Schwellenbach on the first-team are Luke Roskam, Jaxon Hallmark and Cade Povich. Anderson was tabbed as the second-team third baseman and was also honored on the all-freshman team along with Brice Matthews as an at-large pick. Joe Acker was Nebraska’s Sportsmanship Award Honoree.
It’s been over 15 months since Nebraska has hosted any type of prospect on campus for a visit. That all changes today, teams can now host official and unofficial visits, hold private workouts and host satellite camps. The first of two Husker “Friday Night Lights” camps will take place in Memorial Stadium this week. Some top in-state names like Gretna QB Zane Flores, Lincoln Southeast offensive lineman Gunnar Gottula and Aurora linebacker Mack Owens are scheduled to be there.
Kearney will be hosting the 62nd annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl this Saturday night. The South roster includes Kearney High’s Gabe VanWinkle and Jack Johnson, and Kearney Catholic’s Cale Conrad and Logan O’Brien. Kickoff is at 6:00 at UNK’s Ron and Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.
