The Nebraska football team is holding their seventh practice of the fall this morning. Head coach Scott Frost will address the media after the workout. You will find a link to that interview at HUSKERMAX.com. The Huskers open the season with a Week-Zero road game at Illinois, Saturday August 28th. Kickoff will be at noon.
The Big Ten Network’s preseason tour of league campuses began yesterday with a stop in Lincoln for the Huskers’ first full-padded practice of the fall. As expected, analysts Dave Revsine, Howard Griffith, Gerry Dinardo and former Ohio State player Joshua Perry had good things to say about the Huskers. Full coverage from their visit to Lincoln will air on the Big Ten Network Monday.
Two members of the Husker defense have been named to the preseason watch list for the Lombardi Award. Linebacker JoJo Domann and defensive end Ben Stille are among 80 players competing for this year’s award, which is presented annually to the nation’s best college football offensive or defensive lineman. The list of notable past winners includes former Huskers Rich Glover, Dave Rimington, Dean Steinkuhler, Grant Wistrom and Ndamukong Suh. The Lombardi Award winner will be announced Dec 8th.
Former Husker offensive lineman Brent Qvale has signed with the Tennessee Titans. Qvale spent last season with the Houston Texans, appearing in 14 games with three starts. He was on the field for 190 offensive snaps and 58 special teams snaps. Before signing with Houston last year, Qvale spent six seasons with the New York Jets.
One other Big Ten note: Michigan State athletic director Bill Beekman stepped down Thursday afternoon after three years with the Spartans.
The U.S. women’s volleyball team swept Serbia last night to reach the Gold Medal match. The Americans (including former Huskers Jordan Larson, Justine Wong-Orantes and Kelsey Robinson) will play the winner of today’s semi final match between Brazil and South Korea for Gold tomorrow night at 11:30pm.
The Creighton Volleyball team is picked to win the BIG EAST Conference in a preseason poll of league coaches. Bluejay seniors Jaela Zimmerman and Naomi Hickman were both named Preseason All-BIG EAST, with Zimmerman being a unanimous selection. Creighton opens its fall season with exhibition matches on Aug. 14th (Blue/White match) and Aug. 20th (Iowa State) before starting the regular-season on Aug. 27th in Columbia, Mo., vs. UMKC.
The UNK football team will hold their first practice of the fall Monday. Picked to finish fourth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches’ poll, and fifth in the Media Poll, the Lopers open their season Thursday, Sept 2nd with a home game against Missouri Southern.
