The Nebraska football team is holding their 10th practice of the fall this morning, as they continue to prep for their season opener at Illinois. The Huskers open the season at Illinois Saturday, August 28th, kickoff will be at noon.
Adrian Martinez is No. 6 in Athlon’s ranking of Big Ten quarterbacks. Topping the publication’s list is Michael Penix Jr. from Indiana. He’s followed by Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Minnesota’s Tanner Morgan, Wisconsin’s Graham Mertz and Maryland’s Taulia Tagovailoa. Rounding out the list, coming in at No. 14, is former Husker (and now Rutgers Scarlet Knight) Noah Vedral.
Former Husker, and Kearney High Bearcat place kicker, Brett Maher has signed a free agent deal with the New Orleans Saints. The Saints worked out several kickers following the news that former All-Pro Will Lutz would miss time this season because of an injury. He made 39-of-50 field goal attempts in his two years at Nebraska, finishing with 219 points. He also handled punting duties for the Huskers, and twice was named the Big Ten Kicker of the Year. This will be his sixth stop in the NFL afters stints with the Dallas Cowboys, the Arizona Cardinals, the Houston Texans, the New York Jets and the Washington Football Team.
The Nebraska volleyball team held their first practice of the fall yesterday. Head coach John Cook is boasting a loaded roster that includes two returning super seniors in Lexi Sun and Lauren Stivrins, and the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation. The Huskers will practice for two weeks before holding their annual Red-White Scrimmage at the Devaney, Saturday, August 21st. That will be their first match in front of their home fans since the 2019 season. The Huskers’ season opener is Friday, August 27th when they host Tulsa at the Husker Invite.
