The Huskers are holding their 12th practice of the fall this morning. They open the season at Illinois Saturday, August 28th, kickoff will be at noon.
In the battle to be the backup to Adrian Martinez
– Quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco said Logan Smothers has been practicing with the 1s and the 2s this fall, and has worked quite a bit on refining his throwing motion and becoming more consistent as a passer. Verduzco added that Heinrich Haarberg, the freshman from Kearney Catholic, is continuing to learn the playbook and is becoming more comfortable in the offense.
On the injury front;
– Tight ends Travis Vokolek and Austin Allen were among those missing practice Wednesday. With the top two at that postion unavailable, redshirt freshman Chris Hickman and freshman James Carnie got a couple of reps with first-team.
– Injured freshman tight end Thomas Fidone, who had ACL surgery in April, did some very light running and cutting while watching practice. Coach Scott Frost has maintained the possibility that Fidone could be ready to play sometime in the second half of the season.
– Freshman left tackle Turner Corcoran was limited on Wednesday. The 6-foot-6 300-pounder, was at practice and had his pads on, but did not go through normal stretching with the team and did not take part in the walk-through reps with the top offense. With Corcoran limited, redshirt freshman Brant Banks got most of the work with the top unit.
– Other players that did not practice on Wednesday but were in attendance; Nadab Joseph, Mikai Gbayor, Blaise Gunnerson, Colton Feist and Elliott Brown.
