COOK – HAMES READY TO RETURN
The Husker Volleyball team held practices on Monday in preparation for the Ameritas Player Challenge hosted at the Devaney Center this upcoming weekend.
A noticeable absence from last weekend’s wins was setter Nicklin Hames, who injured her ankle in the Huskers Red-White Scrimmage earlier in August.
Head Coach John Cook says Hames is ready to get rolling again…
Nebraska opens up the weekend facing Omaha at 11 AM on Friday. Listen to the contest on KGFW with pregame starting at 10:30 AM.
RODRIGUEZ NAMED CO-BIG TEN FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Nebraska volleyball freshman libero Lexi Rodriguez was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week.
The Sterling, Ill., native recorded a match-high 15 digs and six assists in the No. 5 Huskers’ sweep of Colgate on Friday, followed by a match-best 21 digs in a 3-1 win over Kansas State on Saturday.
It marks the first weekly conference honor of Rodriguez’s career. Previously, NU’s last Freshman of the Week honoree was Madi Kubik on Nov. 18, 2019.
FORMER HUSKER JACKSON CUT BY JETS
Former Cornhuskers defensive back Lamar Jackson has reportedly been cut by the New York Jets. It was reported by ESPN on Monday evening as the Jets are finalizing their 53-man roster for this season.
The undrafted free agent appeared in 13 games last season with the Jets and even started in 6 of them. He recorded no interceptions but had 2 passes defended along with 28 total tackles.
MARTINEZ – FIRST LOSS IS OVER
Husker nation was disappointed to see Nebraska drop the first game of the year to Illinois. It is the third time in four years that the Huskers have dropped their opener.
Quarterback Adrian Martinez says Monday’s practice had the team refocus and ready to improve for Game 2….
The Huskers look to even their record on Saturday at home against Fordham.
MARTINEZ – CORRECTING MISTAKES
One of the more disappointing parts of Saturday’s season opening loss to Illinois was the up-and-down play of four year starting quarterback Adrian Martinez.
Martinez noted in his post-practice press conference on Monday that the change in game plan due to a new defensive front did challenge him….
Martinez lost a fumble that led to an Illini scoop and score but did have a 75 yard touchdown run and nearly led a 21 point comeback before failing to convert a fourth down late in the contest.
FROST PREACHES CONSISTENCY TO EARN PLAYING TIME
Plenty of fresh faces saw action on Saturday for the Husker football team including Gabe Ervin, the first true freshman running back to ever start a season opener for Nebraska.
Other names were noticeably absent in the loss – including second year wideout Zavier Betts who did not record a single snap.
When asked about Betts’ playing time, Head Coach Scott Frost noted at his post practice press conference on Monday that players will need to consistently perform in practice to contribute on game day….
The Huskers wrapped up their Monday practice with a padded practice following a film session Monday morning. Nebraska returns to action on Saturday for their matchup with Fordham.
