UNK VOLLEYBALL RANKED #1

The UNK volleyball team is once again ranked number one in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II Top 25 poll.

The Lopers (8-0), who were third last week, are atop the poll for the 27th time. That ranks fourth most among current and former D2 schools. The last time UNK was ranked number one was the week of September 10, 2018.

The Lopers face tough tests to maintain their rating this week, facing Emporia State on Friday and No. 3 Washburn on Saturday.

UNK FOOTBALL IN TOP 25

The Nebraska-Kearney football team is ranked 23rd in the latest Division 2 Coaches Poll.

This is the first time the Lopers (2-0) have been ranked in a decade. In 2011, UNK went 11-2 and reached the NCAA Playoffs. That team, competing in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), got as high as fourth in the poll which tied a program record.

UNK hosts the No. 29 Washburn Ichabods (2-0) Saturday at 1 p.m. WU is the last team to beat Kearney, winning 57-41 almost two years ago at Cope Stadium.

HUSKER VOLLEYBALL VISITS STANFORD

The No. 6 Nebraska volleyball team (6-1) plays its final non-conference road match of the regular season this Tuesday, Sept. 14, visiting No. 16 Stanford. First serve in the Huskers’ third straight top-20 matchup is set for 7 p.m.

After a midweek sweep of No. 19 Creighton last Wednesday, Nebraska saw its six-match win streak snapped Saturday night in a 3-2 loss to No. 20 Utah.

FROST – OKLAHOMA RIVALRY MEANS MORE

Head Coach Scott Frost has been a part of the Nebraska/Oklahoma rivalry in more ways than one: he was once a fan cheering on the Huskers, then played in the matchup twice as a player, and now has an opportunity to coach against the Sooners on Saturday.

Frost was asked about his thoughts of the return of the matchup…

Nebraska faces Oklahoma Saturday in the early morning 11 a.m. kickoff slate.

FROST – OKLAHOMA’S SPEED SETS THEM APART

Nebraska Head Coach Scott Frost spoke to the media after Monday’s practice. When asked about what he sees as Oklahoma’s biggest strength, Frost complimented the Sooners on their athleticism…

Frost continued that the Sooners host some of the best players at their positions in the country.

FROST – OKLAHOMA HAS SOME OF THE BEST ON THEIR SIDE

In his post practice comments on Monday, Head Coach Scott Frost talked about what stood out the most to him when scouting the Sooners…

Frost added Oklahoma’s speed sets them apart from other programs, and told the Huskers that they will need to play faster to keep up on Saturday.

FROST – NEBRASKA/OKLAHOMA A SPECIAL RIVALRY

Head Coach Scott Frost met with the media after Monday’s practice. Frost was asked if he would bring up the significance of the Nebraska/Oklahoma rivalry to his team…

The Huskers and Sooners face off in Norman for a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the ‘Game of the Century’ from 1971.

FROST – NEED TO GET HEALTHY AGAINST OKLAHOMA

The Huskers were without some of their best playmakers at the skill positions during the Buffalo win last Saturday.

Head Coach Scott Frost adds that he’s hoping to see some familiar faces back in the lineup…

A notable injury from last week’s contest was tight end Austin Allen, whose status is still in the air for Saturday’s contest in Norman.

REIMER EARNS BIG TEN DEFENSIVE HONOR

Nebraska sophomore linebacker Luke Reimer was honored Monday morning as the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Week following the Huskers’ 28-3 win over Buffalo.

Reimer, a 6-1, 225-pound Lincoln native, totaled a career-high 16 tackles and an interception in helping the Blackshirts hold a second straight opponent to single figures.  His 16 tackles marked his third career double-figure tackle game and topped his previous best of 12 at Iowa last season.

REIMER – INTERCEPTION HELPED CHANGE THE GAME

Nebraska sophomore linebacker Luke Reimer made significant plays to aid the Huskers in their 28-3 win over Buffalo on Saturday.

Reimers walks through the play…

Reimers also had a solo tackle stopping a conversion on fourth down and three, as well as had the most tackles for a single Husker since the 2015 season.

NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO NUMBER 6

The AVCA Coaches Poll was released today. Nebraska previously held the No. 3 spot but fell to No. 6 after a loss to Utah on Saturday night.

Nebraska did beat Creighton last Wednesday in a 3-0 sweep, but gave up a two set lead to Utah Saturday night.

The Huskers next opponent, Stanford, sits at No. 16.

USC FOOTBALL FIRES HEAD COACH

USC is firing head football coach Clay Helton after the team’s 42-28 loss to Stanford on Saturday.

Athletic director Mike Bohn confirmed the decision on Twitter on Monday stating a ‘change in leadership’ was needed.

FROST – REIMERS IMPRESSIVE AGAINST BUFFALO

Head Coach Scott Frost was very impressed with the play of sophomore Luke Reimers.

Frost spoke on how the Huskers have always known the linebacker has been talented…

Reimers had only one scholarship offer from a Division 1 school leaving high school – Buffalo.

FROST – CAN NOT LET PENALTIES TAKE SCORES AWAY

Head Coach Scott Frost spoke to the media about the Huskers inability to score on several possessions during the game versus Buffalo due to penalties drawn on the offense…

The Huskers had two touchdowns cleared off the scoreboard due to an illegal forward pass and an offensive pass interference.

FROST – SPECIAL TEAMS FALTERS AGAIN

Head Coach Scott Frost spoke to the media again regarding the Huskers special teams unit from Saturday’s win over Buffalo.

Frost adds that he’s just as frustrated about the lack of success…

The special teams aims to be ready for Saturday’s tilt at Oklahoma.

FROST – DEFENSE PLAYED WELL, OFFENSE NEEDS CONSISTENCY

Head Coach Scott Frost spoke to the media after Saturday’s win over Buffalo. He complimented the Blackshirts defense for bending at times but not breaking, and added he needs to see more from the offense….

Frost added he was impressed by another great performance by quarterback Adrian Martinez.

FROST – STILL WORK TO DO

After a solid effort by both the offense and defense on Saturday’s 28-3 win over Buffalo, Head Coach Scott Frost added in his post game comments that there is still room for improvement…

Special teams had plenty of miscues again on Saturday, losing a punt return and missing three field goals. Two touchdowns were also taken away due to penalties.
