KEARNEY CATHOLIC SOFTBALL WINS C1-9 SUBDISTRICT

The Kearney Catholic Stars Softball team won decidedly over their C1-9 subdistrict field to advance to a district final later this week.

The Stars downed Ord 9-1 in Game 1, followed by a commanding 13-0 victory over Southern Valley/Alma. 

Kearney Catholic is now 27-6 on the season.

 

KEARNEY GIRLS GOLF EARNS BID TO STATE

The Bearcat Girls Golf team qualified for the Class A State Golf Championships in Norfolk with a third place finish in their District meet on Monday. 

The Bearcats finished with a 355 total stroke count, and had an individual qualifier in senior Hannah Lydiatt, shooting 82 and finishing eighth. 

Qualifiers include Lydiatt, seniors Sydney Peterson and Alexa Mahalke, sophomore Addison Peterson, and freshman Olivia James. 

 

BURROUGHS WINS HISTORIC TITLE

Former Husker wrestler Jordan Burroughs won his fifth World Championship, defeating Mohammad Nokhodilarimi of Iran, 5-1, in the men’s freestyle 79 kg final at the World Wrestling Championships on Monday. Burroughs tied John Smith’s U.S. freestyle record of six World and Olympic Championships combined.

In the 79 kg final, Burroughs took the early 3-0 lead with a double-leg takedown followed closely by another double. The victory gave Burroughs his fifth World Championship gold medal, joining his titles in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017.

HUSKERS DOMANN AND MARTINEZ FOR NORTHWESTERN PERFORMANCE

JoJo Domann and Adrian Martinez were both honored Monday morning for their performances in the Huskers’ win over Northwestern last Saturday.  Domann was named Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week, while Martinez was one of eight Manning Award Stars of the Week.

Domann led the Huskers with nine tackles, including eight solo stops, while posting career highs for tackles for loss (3.0), sacks (2.0) and forced fumbles (two).

Martinez accounted for 252 yards of total offense, as the Huskers put up 56 points and over 650 yards of total offense. He completed 11-of-17 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown, while also carrying eight times for 50 yards and a career-high three touchdowns.

 

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL SET FOR 11 AM KICK AGAINST MINNESOTA

The Big Ten Conference announced Monday afternoon that Nebraska’s road game at Minnesota on Saturday, Oct. 16, will kick off at 11 AM. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.

One of the biggest surprises of the Northwestern contest for the Huskers was the success of walk-on freshman Jaquez Yant. 

Head Coach Scott Frost added in his post game press conference that Yant had earned his spot back after a disappointing start to fall camp…

Frost added that Yant is expected to continue to generate more carries in upcoming contests for the Big Red.

 

FROST – GOOD START FOR YOUNG STARTERS

A notable change on the offensive line for the start of the Northwestern contest was the placement of true freshman left tackle Teddy Prochazka.

Frost added he liked what he saw from his young starter, but warned of what too much praise may do…

Prochazka has seen action in all contests so far, and will burn his redshirt status for more action throughout the season.

The storyline of one possession contests for the Nebraska/Northwestern matchups did not come to fruition on Saturday as the Huskers dominated, winning 56-7. 

Quarterback Adrian Martinez added that it was great to get over the Wildcats hump…

Martinez finished with over 200 yards passing with a touchdown toss and three scores on the ground.

 

MARTINEZ – YANT’S BIG DAY WAS TO BE EXPECTED

Quarterback Adrian Martinez did not have to do it himself on Saturday, as freshman walk-on Jaquez Yant showed up and showed out with huge gains on numerous carries. 

Martinez added that this type of performance was to be expected of Yant in his practice habits…

The other Husker backs also had notable carries including Ramir Johnson, Sevion Morrison, and Markese Stepp.

The Cornhuskers won handily on Saturday 56-7 over Northwestern after weeks of turmoil and heartbreak in one score games to Oklahoma and Michigan State.

Domann added that he loved the response of his teammates to not relax after leading at halftime.

 

HUSKER HELPS AUSTRALIA TO ASIA CUP BRONZE

Nebraska’s Jaz Shelley dished out an assist to help Australia roll to an 88-58 victory over Korea in the bronze medal game at the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup in Amman, Jordan on Sunday.

Shelley saw four minutes and 30 seconds of action against Korea as the only active collegiate player on the Opal roster.

Shelley will return to Lincoln to continue preparing for the upcoming 2021-22 Nebraska women’s basketball season. The Huskers officially opened practice on Tuesday, Sept. 28, and celebrated “Husker Hoops Opening Night” alongside the men’s basketball team and thousands of Big Red fans at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Friday
