KEARNEY HIGH & STARS PREPARE FOR PLAYOFF BATTLES
Kearney Catholic finished 9-0 and earned a #2 playoff seeding, meaning they will likely host all playoff contests heading into the State Final. The Stars take on 6-3 and #15 Boys Town on Friday at 6 PM.
The Bearcats earned a #13 seed after punching their ticket in on last Friday’s win over Omaha Northwest. Kearney will face a familiar foe in Elkhorn South, this time on the road in a contest starting at 8 PM on Friday.
KEARNEY CATHOLIC HOSTS DISTRICT FINAL AGAINST ORD
After the Stars locked in their #1 seed in Power points with a C1-10 Sub-District title on Tuesday night, Kearney Catholic earned the right to host their district final matchup.
Ord will travel to the Cope Coliseum for a 1 PM first serve between the Stars and Chanticleers. The winner of each district final matchup will advance to the state tournament.
UNK FOOTBALL READY FOR MIAA TITLE
The No. 17 UNK Football team has been waiting two weeks for this matchup.
After dispatching Lincoln early last week, winning 56-0, the Lopers are set-up for the de facto MIAA title tilt in Maryville, MO on Saturday.
Northwest Missouri State fell to Washburn earlier this season to give UNK sole possession of first place in the conference with a 7-1 record. Due to a missed game earlier this season for a COVID cancellation, Northwest holds a 6-1 record.
Kickoff is set for 2 PM from Maryville, as it is also homecoming for the Bearcats.
SILVERBACKS NO MORE; WOOD-RIVER/SHELTON FOOTBALL SEPARATE
It was a short stint, but the Wood River/Shelton Silverbacks football co-op is no more.
After only two seasons, the Silverbacks will disband and return Wood River and Shelton to their respective football programs. In their two years combined, the Silverbacks competed in Class C1 and held an overall record of 1-17.

HUSKER WOMEN’S SOCCER EARNS MULTIPLE BIG TEN AWARDS
Nebraska’s Reagan Raabe captured third-team All-Big Ten honors to headline a group of three Huskers who earned recognition when the all-conference teams were announced
Raabe started all 18 games and tallied seven goals and three assists for a team-high 17 points.
Newcomer Sarah Weber made the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. A forward from Gretna, Neb., Weber started all 18 games and earned 14 points.
Rounding out Nebraska’s list of Big Ten honorees was senior Olivia Brown, who earned NU’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for soccer.
HASTINGS COLLEGE LOOKS TO GET BACK TO WINNING
The Broncos of Hastings College had a bye week last week and prepare for another road test looking for win two this season.
Hastings College will travel to Yankton, SD to take on Mount Marty College. Kickoff is set for 1 PM.
WISCONSIN ENDS HUSKER WINNING STREAK
The No. 6 Nebraska volleyball team saw its 10-match win streak come to an end Wednesday night, falling 3-0 to No. 3 Wisconsin at the Devaney Center. The Huskers are now 16-4, while the Badgers improve to 18-1.
Nebraska fell by 2, 6, and 2 points respectively in each set.
Nebraska faces its third straight ranked opponent with a visit to No. 11 Minnesota this Saturday, Oct. 30. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Maturi Pavilion in Minneapolis, Minn.
NEBRASKA BASKETBALL OPENS WITH WIN OVER PERU STATE
It didn’t start as the prettiest debut by any stretch, but Nebraska did what it was supposed to do and pulled away for a lopsided 97-58 exhibition win over Peru State on Wednesday night.
Alonzo Verge Jr. came off the bench and filled the stat sheet with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, eight assists, four rebounds, and three steals in 21 minutes of work.
Nebraska led by at least 10 for the majority of the second half and eventually pulled away with a 19-3 run over the final 5:41 to break the game open for good.
BONSALL NAMED MIAA WOMEN’S COACH OF THE YEAR
Nebraska-Kearney head cross country/track and field coach Brady Bonsall has been named the 2021 MIAA Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year.
The Lopers won the 2021 MIAA title this past Saturday at the Kearney Country Club.
Bonsall has led UNK cross country since 2007 and the track team for the past 12 years. His daughter, Grace, was UNK’s top finisher at the MIAA Championships, placing fifth overall. Previously, Bonsall was the 2015 MIAA Men’s Cross Coach of the Year.
