HUSKER VOLLEYBALL WINS OVER PITTSBURGH, FACES WISCONSIN FOR TITLE:

The Nebraska volleyball team will vie for its sixth NCAA title on Saturday after the 10th-seeded Huskers rallied to upend Pitt 3-1 (16-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-22) in the NCAA Semifinal at Nationwide Arena. Nebraska (26-7) will face Wisconsin (30-3) in an all-Big Ten National Championship match Saturday night.

The Huskers made their 10th championship final appearance in program history and their first since 2018. Television coverage Saturday begins with a 6:15 pregame show on ESPN2.

Madi Kubik was solid in all phases of the game to lead Nebraska in the semifinal. Kubik finished with a match-high 13 kills and added a career-high-tying three services aces to go along with seven digs and two blocks. Kubik posted her 24th match this season with at least 10 kills.

Nebraska and Wisconsin will meet in the NCAA Championship Final on Saturday, Dec. 18, with first serve set for 6:15 p.m. CT from Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The match will be televised on ESPN2 and carried on Huskers Radio Network with John Baylor and Lauren Cook West on the call.

JOHN BAYLOR – GAME WINNER CALL

The Nebraska Volleyball team once again flexed its defensive prowess and won over No. 3 Pittsburgh 3-1 late Thursday night to advance to a national title. Listen to the Voice of Husker Volleyball John Baylor on the final point… 

The Huskers take on an all-Big Ten championship, facing off against No. 4 Wisconsin on Saturday evening. 

 

COOK – HUSKERS GOT STRONGER AS THE MATCH WENT ON:

Nebraska Volleyball Head Coach John Cook was nervous to start Thursday night’s match with Pittsburgh as the No. 3 Panthers started hot, but the Huskers rallied to win in four sets after making the right corrections to the Panther attack… 

The Huskers win pushed Nebraska to a National Championship appearance with No. 4 Wisconsin. First serve is set for 6:30 PM.

 

STIVRINS – STUCK TO GAMEPLAN FOR SUCCESS

Nebraska Volleyball earned another chance at a national title after downing Pitt 3-1 on Thursday night. Senior Lauren Stivrins added in the postgame it was all about executing the gameplan… 

The middle blocker was also on the Husker roster during the last Nebraska national title appearance in 2018.

 

HAMES – NEBRASKA PREPARED FOR BIG MOMENTS

The Husker Volleyball team rallied from down in the first set to win in four over No. 3 Pitt on Thursday night. Nicklin Hames added that this Husker team was prepared for a matchup like this… 

Hames and the Huskers take on No. 4 Wisconsin on Saturday night for the National title. The Huskers have only won one set against the Badgers dating back to October 2019, and the last Nebraska win was in September of 2017.

 

STIVRINS – ANOTHER DAY WITH THIS TEAM “MEANS EVERYTHING”

The Husker Volleyball team took the Pitt Panthers down in four sets late Thursday night to set up a National Title showdown with Wisconsin. The last Nebraska national championship was in 2017, and middle blocker Lauren Stivrins was on that Husker squad. 

Stivrins added postgame she’s happy to get another game with this iteration of the Huskers… 

First serve is set for 6:30 PM on Saturday evening against Wisconsin.

 

UNK’S DAVIS AWAITS HARLON HILL ANNOUNCEMENT

The winner of the 2021 Harlon Hill Trophy, the Division II Heisman, will be announced this Friday (Dec. 17) at 2 p.m. Central.

Nebraska-Kearney redshirt junior quarterback TJ Davis is one of eight national finalists.

The announcement will be aired live on Harlon Hill Facebook page and the GAC You Tube Channel. UNK has had two previous national finalists in QB’s Justin Coleman (1999; 6th & 2000; 2nd) and Jake Spitzlberger (2011; 6th). 

The 2021 MIAA and Super Region 3 Offensive Player of the Year, Davis is one of just two QB’s in NCAA’s four divisions (FBS, FCS, D2 and D3) to throw for at least 2,000 and run for 1,000 yards this fall. Having a hand in 40 touchdowns (21 passing, 18 rushing and one receiving), the second-team AFCA All-American had eight games with at least two TD tosses, five 100-yard rushing days and four games with four TD’s.

 

FORMER HUSKER MARTINEZ LANDS AT KANSAS STATE:

Former Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez announced on Thursday night he will spend his final season at Kansas State.

Martinez is in the midst of recovering from a shoulder injury, but leaves Nebraska as the record holder in total yards and some other categories.

Martinez is familiar with K-State, as he is dating a member of the school’s soccer team.

The Wildcats expect to return three other scholarship quarterbacks next season in Will Howard, Jaren Lewis and Jake Rubley.

 

STORM RETURN HOME FOR TEDDY BEAR TOSS:

The Tri-City Storm returns home to the Viaero Center tonight following a seven-game road trip that lasted nearly a month. Tri-City will host the organization’s annual “Teddy Bear Toss Night” in a matchup against the Sioux City Musketeers tonight. 

Fans are encouraged to bring a teddy bear to the game to be donated by throwing it on the ice following the Storm’s first goal of the night. Puck drop for tonight’s game is scheduled for 7:05pm CT.

 

KEARNEY HIGH BASKETBALL TRAVELS TO NORTHEAST NEBRASKA:

The Bearcat basketball teams hit the road this weekend to travel to Norfolk and Columbus for road tests against the Panthers and Discoverers, respectively. 

The Kearney Girls (2-2) take on the Panthers (0-4) to start the doubleheader on Friday evening. Kearney looks to rebound after falling to Omaha Central last Saturday night. Pregame coverage starts at 5:45 PM Friday. 

The Kearney Boys (1-3), currently on a three game losing skid, look to right the ship against the winless Panthers (0-4). Pregame start time is anticipated for 7:15 PM. 

 

HUSKER FOOTBALL ANNOUNCES FULL SIGNING DAY CLASS:

The Nebraska Football team ended National Signing Day with 13 scholarship additions and 4 walk-on commitments. Head Coach Scott Frost reiterated that he wanted a smaller class to help fill gaps needed for the future.

The early-enrollee signees from in-state include: Jake Appleget of Lincoln Southwest, Gage Stenger of Millard South, Ernest Hausmann of Columbus, with walk-ons Cooper Hausmann from Roca (Norris), Luke Lindenmeyer from La Vasita (Papillion-LaVista), and Blake Miller from Nebraska City.

FROST – EXCITED FOR NEW ADDITIONS

Head Coach of Nebraska Football Scott Frost spoke at his national signing day press conference and was thrilled to see the 13 names sign with Nebraska on Wednesday… 

That number also does not include the number of transfers that have entered the program. Four walk-ons were also added to the class. 

 

FROST – KEEPING AN EYE ON THE PORTAL, HAPPY WITH GUYS WE HAVE

Head Coach of the Huskers Scott Frost was asked regarding the smaller class and how the transfer portal affected Nebraska’s recruiting… 

Nebraska has grabbed key pieces in the portal already, claiming former 4-star defensive back Tommi Hill from Arizona State and also adding walk-on long snapper Brady Weas and Kicker Spencer Pankratz.
