KEARNEY / NORTH PLATTE BASKETBALL CONTESTS POSTPONED:

The Kearney High and North Platte basketball games scheduled for Thursday evening have been postponed due to the cancellation of school for Thursday, January 6 caused by the winter weather and predicted snowfall.

Both games have been rescheduled to Thursday, January 27 and will keep the same start times as previously agreed to.

The Kearney Girls basketball team travels to Lincoln Southeast on Friday while the boys stay home to take on Southeast.

The Bearcat Girls return home on Saturday to take on York in the Nebraska Girls Basketball Showcase game.

NEBRASKA BASEBALL RATED TOP 25 IN FIRST PRE-SEASON POLL:

Nebraska has a top-25 baseball team in the eyes of the first major preseason poll released Thursday.

The Huskers start at No. 22 according to Perfect Game and are the only ranked Big Ten program.

Two of their regular-season opponents are also ranked in No. 8 TCU — which NU faces for three games at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, Feb. 25-27 — and No. 24 Long Beach State, which comes to Haymarket Park on March 11-13.

Nebraska went 34-14 last year, playing all of its games in a Big Ten-only schedule and an NCAA regional at Arkansas.

NEBRASKA MEN FAIL TO CONTAIN SPARTY:

Four Huskers scored in double figures Wednesday night at Michigan State but NU struggled with its shot in the second half in a 79-67 road loss to the 10th-ranked Spartans.

Nebraska trailed by just four at halftime and it was still a two-possession game with seven minutes remaining before Michigan State pulled away with a 12-2 run.

The Spartans improved to 11-2 with the win and remained unbeaten in Big Ten play by moving to 4-0. Nebraska fell to 6-9 overall and 0-4 in conference action.

Nebraska remains on the road for its next game, as the Huskers travel to New Jersey to take on Rutgers Saturday at 1 p.m

NEBRASKA MEN’S BASKETBALL POSTGAME COMMENTS:

HOIBERG – GOOD START, COULD NOT FINISH AGAINST SPARTY

Nebraska Men’s Basketball fell on the road at No. 10 Michigan State Wednesday night, and Head Coach Fred Hoiberg said in his postgame comments he was optimistic for the contest after the start by his team…

Hoiberg and the Huskers travel to Rutgers on Saturday for a 1 PM tip-off.

HOIBERG – EFFORT AND ENERGY THERE FOR HUSKERS

After a promising start, Nebraska Men’s Basketball fell at Michigan State 79-67 Wednesday night. Head Coach Fred Hoiberg was happy with his team’s efforts in his postgame comments…

Hoiberg and the Huskers look to end their two game losing skid against Rutgers in New Jersey on Saturday.

HOIBERG – CANNOT HAVE EMPTY POSSESSIONS

Head Coach for Nebraska Men’s Basketball Fred Hoiberg said in his postgame comments after the loss to Michigan State that he continues to see improvement, but the Huskers will have to break the bad luck with better offensive possessions…

Nebraska travels to New Jersey on Saturday to take on Rutgers then returns home on Tuesday night.

FORMER HUSKER ROBINSON TO ENTER NFL DRAFT:

Wan’Dale Robinson transferred to Kentucky last year with the hopes of developing as a slot receiver in an offense that would prepare him for the National Football League. After a record-setting year, Robinson believes he proved enough to take a shot at the next level. Robinson declared for the NFL Draft following Kentucky’s Citrus Bowl victory against Iowa.

The Frankfort, Kentucky, native set single-season school records for receptions (104) and yards (1,334) in his lone season in Lexington. He became Kentucky’s first 1,000-yard receiver in a season since Randall Cobb in 2010. Pro Football Focus considers Robinson to be one of the best ‘gadget’ prospects in the draft.

FACE COVERINGS BACK IN PLACE AT NEBRASKA EVENTS:

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln announced Wednesday that it will require face coverings indoors, including at University events, until further notice.  This University policy will include all Husker indoor athletic contests at Pinnacle Bank Arena, the Bob Devaney Sports Center, including the arena, indoor track and pool areas, and the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.

Husker fans at all of these venues will be asked to wear a face covering (covering both the nose and mouth) when inside the venue. The University mask policy is effective immediately, with the first home events under the policy being Nebraska’s home wrestling match on Friday vs. Purdue (Devaney Center), the Sunday women’s basketball game vs. Iowa (PBA) and Tuesday night’s men’s basketball game vs. Illinois (PBA).

PORTAL QUARTERBACK THOMPSON HAS HUSKERS IN TOP 5:

Before one of the top quarterbacks in the college transfer market makes his final decision on a new school, he and his dad took in Lincoln on a blustery Wednesday.

Former Texas quarterback Casey Thompson now has a top five of Nebraska, Indiana, Auburn, Missouri and Oklahoma, where his dad Charles Thompson played quarterback for two seasons in the late 1980s. Charles Thompson beat one of the Huskers’ best teams in 1987.

Thompson — who threw for 2,113 yards and 24 touchdowns last season — has been on NU’s radar for some time. offensive coordinator Mark Whipple has visited several other prospects, including Florida State transfer Chubba Purdy — who is visiting Jan. 14.

NEBRASKA WRESTLING HOSTS PURDUE ON FRIDAY:

The No. 8 Nebraska wrestling team is set to welcome No. 18 Purdue to the Devaney Center on Friday for the opening conference dual for both teams. Action is slated to begin at 7 p.m.

Competition will be fierce as six of ten bouts potentially feature matchups between ranked wrestlers. Six Huskers enter the weekend ranked in the Top 25, including returning All-Americans No. 3 Mikey Labriola (174), No. 5 Eric Schultz (197), No. 6 Peyton Robb (157), No. 8 Ridge Lovett (149), No. 10 Chad Red Jr. (141) and No. 11 Taylor Venz (184). The All-American group boasts a collective 12-1 dual meet record and has scored 58 dual meet points for the Big Red this season.

Prior to NU’s dual, two Nebraska high schools will square off on the Devaney Center floor. Central City and David City Aquinas will grapple beginning at 5 p.m. with doors opening at 4 p.m.

NEBRASKA WOMEN BLOW PAST TOP TEN MICHIGAN:

Freshman Alexis Markowski erupted for a career-high 20 points in her first career start, while Jaz Shelley added her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead Nebraska to an impressive 79-58 women’s basketball win over No. 8 Michigan on Tuesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The Huskers improved to 13-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten.

The victory was Nebraska’s 10th straight at home, as the Huskers improved to 9-0 in Lincoln this season. Nebraska continues Big Ten home action on Sunday when the Huskers play host to No. 21 Iowa. Tip-off between the Big Red and the Hawkeyes is set for 1 p.m.

NEBRASKA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL POSTGAME COMMENTS:
