Kearney entered the contest on Tuesday riding high, coming off a Saturday night upset over then No. 8 Lincoln Southwest. Sitting at 7-7, the Bearcats matched up with the winless Omaha Northwest Huskies who had fallen on another tough season. The Huskies entered the contest at 0-11 and had not won a contest since February of 2021.
As the game tipped off, Omaha Northwest did everything in its power to give Kearney a run for their money early. Firing three pointers and fast attacks at the basket, the Huskies had Kearney on their heels to start the game. Kearney responded to every punch thrown, as the first three pointer made by Northwest’s Maison Johnson was quickly answered by the Bearcats’ Jack Mundorf. Northwest would trade leads with Kearney throughout the next six minutes, as Northwest’s Walton Busby knocked down his triple while Marlon Coleman added four points. The Bearcats faced some troubles, but senior Will Vanderbeek impressed with four points early, then ran the paint inside while adding scores on back-to-back-to-back scores. Vanderbeek’s ten points in the first quarter gave Kearney the early advantage, up 18-14.
