HUSKER WOMEN UPSET HOOSIERS:

Sam Haiby scored 10 of her team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter to lead five Huskers in double figures as the Nebraska women’s basketball team handed No. 5 Indiana a 72-55 loss at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Monday night.

Jaz Shelley matched Haiby for the team scoring lead with 14 points of her own, including a huge fourth-quarter three-pointer that gave Indiana its largest deficit of the season at 65-48 with 3:53 left.

The Huskers (19-6, 8-6 Big Ten) held Indiana without a field goal for the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter and used a 17-0 run capped by Haiby’s layup to put the Big Ten-leading Hoosiers away. Indiana slipped to 18-4 and 10-2 in the Big Ten with the loss. Nebraska entered the game at No. 20 in the NCAA’s NET rankings, while Indiana began the day at No. 15 in the NET.

Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Year candidate Alexis Markowski continued her powerful play inside with her fifth double-double of the season, contributing 10 points and a career-high-tying 15 rebounds.

Nebraska returns to Big Ten road action on Thursday when the Huskers travel to University Park to take on Penn State. Tip-off between the Big Red and the Lady Lions is set for 6 p.m.

McGOWENS EARNS ANOTHER BIG TEN HONOR:

Nebraska’s Bryce McGowens picked up his third consecutive Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week award Monday, as he was honored by the conference. 

McGowens averaged 13.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game in helping the Huskers to a 1-1 week. In NU’s win over Minnesota, McGowens had 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting and four rebounds in the 78-65 victory. He posted his seventh consecutive double-figure effort against Iowa with 11 points and four rebounds in the loss to the Hawkeyes.

It is the sixth time McGowens has received the honor, as he becomes the eighth Big Ten Freshman to receive at least six honors in a season since the freshman weekly award started in 2010-11.

 

UNK’S EIGHMEY EARNS CAREER WIN 200:

With a win over Rogers State on Saturday afternoon, ​​UNK gave head coach Carrie Eighmey her 200th career win (200-97). 

She is in her seventh season at UNK (132-66) after beginning her career at Hastings College (68-31; three years).

 

NEBRASKA MENS & WOMENS T&F RANKED IN TOP 25:

The Nebraska track and field team is the only Big Ten program to appear in both men’s and women’s rankings of the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Association’s NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.

The Husker men are ranked for the fourth consecutive week, checking in at No. 15 with a total of 56.63. The Women appeared in the national poll for the second straight week and improved four spots to No. 18 with a score of 35.90.

The Nebraska track and field team hosts the Nebraska Tune-Up on Friday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. at the Devaney Center Indoor Track.

 

NEBRASKA SOFTBALL’S SQUIER NAMED CO-BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Sophomore outfielder Abbie Squier was named the first Big Ten Player of the Week for the 2022 season the conference announced on Monday, as she shared the honor with Northwestern’s Rachel Lewis.

Squier was recognized for an outstanding opening weekend at the UNI Dome Classic in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Squier hit .500 in five games with one double, two homers and four RBIs. Her two home runs were the first of her career.

It is the Lincoln native’s first Big Ten weekly award of her career. 

 

LOPER MEN’S TRACK SET MORE RECORDS:

The Nebraska-Kearney track and field team set four new school-records this weekend at the Indoor Gorilla Classic and Ichabod Invite.

Late Friday, the foursome of Hastings junior Seth Simonson, Wallace sophomore Micah Swedberg, Fremont redshirt freshman Wes Ferguson and McCool Junction junior Luke Stuckey finished fourth (9:41.05) out of 27 teams in the distance medley relay. This time currently ranks fifth on the national list and ninth in D2 history.

On Saturday, it was time for UNK to set a new mark in the 4×4 relay. Swedburg, Ferguson, Willis and Ravenna freshman Jack Drahota turned in a 3:14.41. That broke a 21-year old UNK record (3:16.61) and was good for 10th in a tough field of 48.
