ADRIAN MARTINEZ – WHY HE LEFT NEBRASKA COMMENTS; FROM ‘Athletes Unfiltered’ PODCAST:

MARTINEZ – PLAYING WITH A BROKEN JAW

Former Nebraska Quarterback Adrian Martinez spoke on his ‘Athletes Unfiltered’ podcast for the first time since leaving the Huskers to transfer to Kansas State. Martinez spoke about what it took for him to play through the final stretch of the 2021 season with a broken jaw after the Michigan State contest… 

Martinez added that his jaw has permanently shifted and has now fully recovered from the injury.

 

MARTINEZ – CHALLENGES OF DAY-TO-DAY WITH JAW INJURY

Former Husker Quarterback Adrian Martinez spoke on his podcast ‘Athletes Unfiltered’ about playing with his broken jaw through the 2021 season, including what it was like in day-to-day activities and with football… 

The quarterback elected to transfer from Nebraska to Kansas State in the offseason for one last shot at making the NFL. 

 

MARTINEZ – FIRINGS WERE TOUGH FOR TEAM

Former Nebraska Quarterback Adrian Martinez spoke about the mid-season firings of most of the offensive coaching staff on his podcast ‘Athletes Unfiltered’. The all-time leader in offensive yardage for the Huskers said it was not easy on the team… 

Martinez would later say the decision to fire the staff led to his decision to transfer elsewhere in the offseason.

 

MARTINEZ – FIRINGS INFLUENCED DECISION TO TRANSFER

Adrian Martinez, the former four-year starting quarterback for the Nebraska football team, elected to leave the Huskers for Kansas State at the conclusion of the 2021 season. Martinez spoke on his ‘Athletes Unfiltered’ podcast that the decision by Head Coach Scott Frost to remove most of his offensive coaching staff heavily influenced his decision to leave… 

Martinez will now battle at the Wildcats for the starting role after leaving Nebraska as the all-time leader in career yardage. 

 

FORMER HUSKER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COACH SELECTED TO WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME:

Former Nebraska women’s basketball head coach Paul Sanderford was selected for induction into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in the Class of 2022. The 23rd induction class into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame will be honored on June 11 in Knoxville, Tenn.

In 25 seasons as a collegiate head coach, Sanderford posted a 453-189 record. He led Western Kentucky to a dozen NCAA Tournament appearances, including three trips to the Women’s Final Four.

Sanderford left Western Kentucky after the 1996-97 season and took over the Nebraska program. In his first season with the Huskers, he led the Big Red to a 23-10 record and a trip to the NCAA second round. The 23 victories tied the school single-season record at the time.

Sanderford was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Western Kentucky Hall of Fame in 2008

 

NEW UNK SOCCER COACH TO BE NAMED ON THURSDAY:

The UNK Women’s Soccer program will be naming a new head coach in a press conference on Thursday morning at 11 AM. 

The Women’s Soccer program’s last head coach, Chloe Roberts, left the program in November and has since joined the Marshall University soccer program. Assistant coach David Farias also left the program to return home to California. 

The new coach will become the fourth coach in the Women’s Soccer program history at UNK.

 

HUSKER WOMEN UPSET HOOSIERS:

Sam Haiby scored 10 of her team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter to lead five Huskers in double figures as the Nebraska women’s basketball team handed No. 5 Indiana a 72-55 loss at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Monday night.

The Huskers (19-6, 8-6 Big Ten) held Indiana without a field goal for the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter and used a 17-0 run capped by Haiby’s layup to put the Big Ten-leading Hoosiers away. Indiana slipped to 18-4 and 10-2 in the Big Ten with the loss. 

Nebraska returns to Big Ten road action on Thursday when the Huskers travel to University Park to take on Penn State. Tip-off between the Big Red and the Lady Lions is set for 6 p.m.

 

NEBRASKA WOMENS BASKETBALL POSTGAME v. INDIANA:

WILLIAMS – HUSKERS STAYED FRESH TO WIN THE GAME

Head Coach Amy Williams of the Nebraska Women’s Basketball team celebrated a monumental upset over No. 5 Indiana on Monday night. In her postgame comment, Williams shared that enthusiasm… 

The Huskers had five Huskers score in double figures and forced the Hoosiers into their worst deficit defeat on the season. 

 

WILLIAMS – EVERYONE CONTRIBUTING IN WIN OVER HOOSIERS

Head Coach Amy Williams was proud of her team’s efforts in the upset win over Indiana on Monday night, and said in her postgame comments that it was the epitome of a team win… 

The Huskers are now 8-6 in the Big Ten and sit at sixth in the conference. 

 

WILLIAMS – DEFENSIVE EFFORT MADE THE DIFFERENCE

Amy Williams’ Huskers flexed their defensive muscles in the fourth quarter to power past No. 5 Indiana on Monday night for the upset win at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Williams spoke in her postgame that the defensive effort was even more impressive with how talented the Hoosiers are… 

The Huskers now await Penn State and a matchup in State College on Thursday. 

 

NEBRASKA MENS & WOMENS T&F RANKED IN TOP 25:

The Nebraska track and field team is the only Big Ten program to appear in both men’s and women’s rankings of the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Association’s NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.

The Husker men are ranked for the fourth consecutive week, checking in at No. 15 with a total of 56.63. The Women appeared in the national poll for the second straight week and improved four spots to No. 18 with a score of 35.90.

The Nebraska track and field team hosts the Nebraska Tune-Up on Friday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. at the Devaney Center Indoor Track.

 

NEBRASKA SOFTBALL’S SQUIER NAMED CO-BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Sophomore outfielder Abbie Squier was named the first Big Ten Player of the Week for the 2022 season the conference announced on Monday, as she shared the honor with Northwestern’s Rachel Lewis.

Squier was recognized for an outstanding opening weekend at the UNI Dome Classic in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Squier hit .500 in five games with one double, two homers and four RBIs. Her two home runs were the first of her career.

It is the Lincoln native’s first Big Ten weekly award of her career.
