HUSKER BASEBALL PINCHES OUT BISON FOR ONE RUN WIN:

Cam Chick and Griffin Everitt homered and the Husker bullpen pitched 5.1 scoreless innings in Nebraska’s 4-3 win vs. North Dakota State at Hawks Field on Wednesday night.

Nebraska (14-21) scored four runs on seven hits and an error, while NDSU (21-12) had three runs with seven hits and an error.

Everitt led the Huskers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, home run and two RBI. Chick reached base in all four plate appearances with a solo home run and being hit by the pitch three times.

Nebraska steps back into conference play this weekend, as the Huskers venture to Bloomington, Ind., for a three-game series at Indiana on Friday-Sunday.

KEARNEY HIGH BASEBALL FACES DOUBLEHEADER AT JUNIOR JAYS:

The Bearcat Baseball team makes the long trek to the Metro once again for a doubleheader showdown with the Creighton Junior Jays – one of the best teams in Class A.

Creighton sits atop the Nebpreps.com coaches poll and holds the best record in Class A at 18-4. They also sit #2 in Class A Power Points.

Kearney High enters at #7 in Power Points and #10 in the coaches poll at 11-6 on the season having won 4 of their last 5.

Pregame begins at 2:50 PM on KGFW with Austin Jacobsen on the call from Creighton Prep. First pitch begins at 3 PM.

ROGERS HITS TRANSFER PORTAL:

Nebraska defensive lineman Casey Rogers has entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal.

Rogers was poised to potentially start and see a lot of snaps for the Huskers’ depleted defensive line in 2022.

A year ago Rogers battled an early-season injury and only played 139 snaps, compared to 243 in the shortened 2020 season.

Over his career, Rogers played in 23 games with one start coming in 2020. He saw eight games of action in 2020 and seven in 2021.

Rogers is the first scholarship player to enter the transfer portal since spring practice ended on Apr. 9.

UNK GOLFERS TABBED ALL-MIAA:

Nebraska-Kearney senior Faviola Gonzalez and freshman Juliana Botero Molina represent the Lopers on the 2022 All-MIAA team.

The squad is voted upon by the league’s nine head coaches and they cannot vote for their own players.

Gonzalez (Cayey, P.R.) makes the second-team with Botero Molina (Colombia) receiving honorable mention. They become the fifth and sixth Lopers to make the squad and this marks the second time in three years UNK has had two players selected.

UNK VOLLEYBALL HOSTS LEGENDS CLASSIC SATURDAY:

The Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team will wrap up the spring with its annual “Legends Classic” this Saturday at the Health & Sports Center.

A total of 13 teams – including the current UNK squad being divided into “Blue” and “Gold” groups – will play three matches each. The field also consists of four Loper Alumni teams (Legends Gray, Black, White and Royal), Bellevue, Doane, Hastings, Midland, Cloud (Kan.) County C.C., Seward (Kan.) County C.C. and North Platte C.C.

Action begins at 10:30 a.m. with each match lasting 45 minutes or two sets to 25 points. Matches are slated to start at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:45 p.m. and 2:45 p.m.

The event is free to the public.

JAY WRIGHT RETIRES FROM VILLANOVA:

Jay Wright shocked college basketball Wednesday night with his immediate resignation at Villanova, the Big East program he led to two national championships and four Final Fours in a Hall of Fame career.

The 60-year-old Wright guided Villanova to titles in 2016 and 2018 and just led the Wildcats to the Final Four, where they lost to national champion Kansas. He went 520-197 in 21 seasons at the school and 642-282 overall, also coaching Hofstra from 1994–2001.

Kyle Neptune, who served on the Villanova coaching staff before accepting the head coaching position at Fordham in 2021, returned to replace Wright.

HUSKER SOFTBALL RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION:

It didn’t happen all season for Nebraska women’s basketball, but with just a few weeks to go in the regular season, Nebraska softball has entered the top-25 rankings.

The Huskers are No. 21 in the D1Softball Top 25 and No. 25 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Nebraska was last ranked in a top-25 poll in 2016. That was the last time NU made regionals.

Nebraska is 33-9 for the season and on an 18-game winning streak. The Huskers are on top of the Big Ten Conference standings with a 13-0 league record.

FLORES: “NO WORD” FROM HUSKERS:

The top quarterback in the state of Nebraska recruiting is 4 star recruit Zane Flores from Gretna. Flores announced his commitment to Oklahoma State earlier this week after garnering interest from national schools and across the Big Ten conference.

Flores never received an offer from the Huskers however, and was asked why not Nebraska…

The Gretna quarterback can still receive offers and could switch his decision but for now he remains a Cowboy for one of the more consistent Big 12 programs the best decade with Mike Gundy at the helm.
