HUSKER BASEBALL SPLITS SUNDAY DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST IOWA:
After dominating the first contest in a Sunday doubleheader, Nebraska fell in Game 2 to Iowa 5-3.
Garrett Anglim became the fourth Husker all-time with a three-homer game in Nebraska’s 12-1 run-rule victory in seven innings in game one of Sunday’s doubleheader vs. Iowa at Hawks Field.
Anglim’s three-homer game is the fifth in program history, joining Bob Cerv (1950), Steve Stanicek (1982) and Dan Johnson (2000, 2001).
Nebraska’s 12 runs in game one marked the third time in its last five games with at least 10 runs, including two run-rule victories in the last three games.
However, Nebraska had its first extra-inning game this season, falling 5-3 in the 10-inning series finale vs. Iowa on Sunday afternoon at Hawks Field.
The Huskers (18-25, 6-9 Big Ten) had three runs on seven hits and an error, while the Hawkeyes (26-14, 10-5) scored five runs on nine hits and an error.
Nebraska now heads to Minnesota on Friday to take on a three game series against the Golden Gophers.
MATHIS CHOOSES HUSKERS OVER LONGHORNS:
Nebraska had targeted TCU’s Ochaun Mathis as long as any player in the transfer portal this off-season. This past weekend, the Big Red closed the deal.
Mathis announced on Saturday he will play for the Huskers in 2022, picking the Big Red over Texas.
This is arguably the biggest position of need for Nebraska heading into the 2022 season, and Mathis is regarded as the most proven pass rusher currently in the transfer portal. The Athletic ranked Mathis on Apr. 27 as the No. 1 overall available player currently in the transfer portal.
The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Mathis was a second-team All-Big 12 selection in both 2020 and 2021. He lead the Big 12 in 2020 with nine sacks over 10 games, to go along with 14 tackles for loss.
STORM SHUTOUT LANCERS TO ADVANCE TO FINALS:
The Tri-City Storm advanced to the 2022 Western Conference Final Sunday afternoon after completing a two-game sweep of the Omaha Lancers in the Conference Semifinals Round of the Clark Cup Playoffs. The Storm posted a 4-0 road shut out of the Lancers on Sunday following a 7-4 win at the Viaero Center on Saturday night.
Tri-City will return home to the Viaero Center to host the first two games of the Conference Final round of the playoffs on Friday and Saturday. Tickets go on sale at 10 AM today.
Tri-City now awaits the winner of Game #3 of the Western Conference Semifinal matchup between the Sioux City Musketeers and Waterloo Black Hawks to face in the next round of the postseason. The decisive game between the Musketeers and Black Hawks will be played Tuesday at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, IA.
KEARNEY BASEBALL TAKES ON OMAHA BURKE IN FINAL REGULAR SEASON CONTEST:
The Kearney High baseball team takes their short winning streak to Omaha as the Bearcats battle Omaha Burke for the final regular season game on Monday early afternoon.
Kearney looks to angle their way to a top six seed in Class A power points with a win, giving the Bearcats a home district tournament. Pregame coverage begins at 12:20 PM with first pitch from Burke set for 2 PM.
THREE HUSKERS SELECTED IN NFL DRAFT; SEVERAL HUSKERS PICKED UP AS UDFA:
Three former Nebraska Cornhusker football players were selected in the NFL Draft over the weekend.
In Day 2 on Friday in the second round, Cam Jurgens was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles. Jurgens became the highest drafted Huskers since Prince Amukamara went in the first round to the Giants back in 2011.
Later in the second round, former Husker Zac Taylor made the call to Cam Taylor-Britt, selecting the cornerback to the Cincinnati Bengals. It’s the first time two Huskers have been selected in the second round since Ameer Abdullah and Randy Gregory were both selected in 2015.
Finally, on the final day and in the seventh round, receiver Samori Toure was picked by the Green Bay Packers.
JoJo Domann, Austin Allen, Damion Daniels, Ben Stille, and Deontre Thomas were all picked up on undrafted free-agent signings to NFL rosters: Domann to the Colts, Allen to the New York Giants, Daniels to the Houston Texans, Stille to the Dolphins, and Thomas to the Seahawks.
HUSKER SOFTBALL WINS IN FIVE INNINGS OVER BUCKEYES:
Mya Felder doubled twice and drove in four runs to power the Nebraska softball team to a 9-1 five-inning victory over Ohio State in the final game of a three-game series in Columbus, Ohio.
Felder produced her fourth multi-double game of her career and her four RBIs were a season high.
Olivia Ferrell (18-6) earned the win, tossing a complete game and allowing one run in 5.0 innings.
The Huskers will return to action at Bowlin Stadium next weekend. Nebraska will take on Indiana in a three-game series for the final weekend of the regular season.
LOPER SOFTBALL TO FACE UCO IN MIAA TOURNAMENT:
The Nebraska-Kearney softball team is the seventh-seed in this year’s MIAA Tournament and will take on second-seed and nationally-ranked Central Oklahoma Wednesday night in a first round game.
The Lopers (23-25, 13-13) are making its first appearance in the MIAA’s since joining the league in 2013. The last postseason game for the program came in April 2012 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament.
The MIAA’s will be Wednesday through Saturday at UCO’s Gerry Pinkston Stadium with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. All games can be viewed on The MIAA Network with the live stat link on the Loper schedule page.
UNK and Emporia State both had the same league records this spring and both were swept by MIAA regular season champion Washburn. The Lopers won the tie-breaker thanks to a 3-0 win over UCO (44-8, 23-3) on April 22. That marked Kearney’s second win over the ‘Chos in the last four meetings between the two.
