KEARNEY BASEBALL FALLS TO ELKHORN SOUTH TO END STATE BOUND SEASON:

The Kearney High baseball team fell to Elkhorn South on Monday afternoon to wrap up their high school season at 15-11 on the year. 

Kearney fell early down 2-1 by the bottom of the fourth inning, but a late push by Elkhorn South to take a 10-1 lead into the sixth inning was quickly shortened by a four-run top of the sixth. Kearney’s bats could not keep the momentum however, as the Bearcats added three more runs to fall 10-8 to the Storm.  

HUSKER BASEBALL TAKES ON ORAL ROBERTS AT HOME:

Nebraska welcomes Oral Roberts to Hawks Field, as the Huskers play their final non-conference midweek matchup of the season against the Golden Eagles.

First pitch between Nebraska and Oral Roberts is set for 6:35 p.m tonight.

Oral Roberts enters tonight’s midweek matchup with a 33-16 overall record and 15-6 mark in Summit League play after taking two of three games at Omaha last weekend.

Nebraska and Oral Roberts have met 37 times on the diamond, with the Golden Eagles holding a 21-16 lead in the all-time series. Nebraska last played Oral Roberts in Lincoln in the 2008 postseason, where the Golden Eagles eliminated the Huskers in the Lincoln Regional with an 8-0 victory.

STARS, BEARCATS QUALIFY BOYS GOLF TEAMS FOR STATE:

District golf action took place around the state Monday, with Kearney Catholic competing in the C-5 District at Valentine while the Kearney High boys battled in Norfolk. 

Kearney Catholic won the C-5 District championship, qualifying the entire team for state tournament play. 

Kearney High came behind Omaha Westside the A-1 District tournament, but their second place finish still qualifies the Bearcats for the State Tournament. Cole Feddersen finished third overall, followed by Cole Schroer and Perry Swarm in fourth and fifth, respectively. 

Class A State Golf will return to Norfolk next week on Tuesday and Wednesday with a two-day, championship first and second round. Class C will compete at the Elks Country Club in Columbus.

VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS REMOVE DeBOER:

The Vegas Golden Knights fired coach Peter DeBoer on Monday in the aftermath of missing the playoffs for the first time in their five-year franchise history.

General manager Kelly McCrimmon made the announcement and thanked DeBoer for his work with the organization, but also said the team was looking for a fresh voice roughly four months before training camp opens.

Vegas failed to qualify for the playoffs after a barrage of injuries compounded by salary cap problems wreaked havoc on the lineup, most notably in goal. The Golden Knights at one point were first in the Pacific Division but after 82 games found themselves three points back of the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference
