RUNZA SENIORS FACE HASTINGS IN MEMORIAL FIELD HOME OPENER:
Despite a valiant effort in a 5.2 inning stretch from Blake Rehtus, Runza Kearney could not overcome a three-run bottom of the second by Columbus dropping the Runza Seniors to 0-6 on the year in the 3-1 Tuesday night loss.
Runza returns to action tonight in their home opener at Memorial Field against Hastings. Pregame coverage is set to start at 7:20 PM with first pitch at 7:30 PM. Austin Jacobsen will bring the action on 1340 AM, 96.1 FM, on the free KGFW Mobile App, and at KGFW.com.
SERGEEV NAMED USHL GOALTENDER OF THE YEAR:
Tri-City Storm goaltender Arsenii Sergeev has been named the USHL Goaltender of the Year for the 2021-2022 season. Sergeev joins former Storm goaltenders Filip Larsson and Isaiah Saville as the third player in organizational history to win the award.
He led the USHL in multiple goaltending statistical categories during the 2021-2022 regular season including Wins (30,) Goals Against Average (2.08), Save Percentage (0.918%), and Shutouts (6). His thirty wins during the 2021-2022 regular season were the most in a single-season by a goaltender in the organization’s twenty-two-year history.
Sergeev was named the USHL’s “Goaltender of the Week” four times during the regular season, the most of any goaltender in the league this year.
TREY McGOWENS FOLLOWS BRYCE TO PRO RANKS:
Nebraska guard Trey McGowens announced Tuesday that he will pursue a professional basketball career and will not use his final season of eligibility.
McGowens, a 6-foot-4, 196-pound guard from Pendleton, S.C., started two seasons at Nebraska and averaged 9.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game while he was often assigned to the opponent’s top perimeter scoring threat.
Last season, McGowens averaged 6.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game despite missing 15 games with a broken bone in his foot suffered in the third game of the season. He was playing some of his best basketball down the stretch, averaging 7.8 points on 55 percent shooting, 3.5 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game over the Huskers’ final six contests.
McGowens, who was a two-year starter at Pittsburgh before coming to Lincoln, finishes his collegiate career with 1,167 points, 387 rebounds, 262 assists and 192 steals.
TRI-CITY’S MILLER NAMED USHL PLAYER OF THE YEAR:
Tri-City Storm defenseman Mitchell Miller has been named the United States Hockey League’s (USHL) Player of the Year and Defenseman of the Year for the 2021-2022 season.
Miller joins former Storm defender Ronnie Attard as the second player in organizational history to win each award. He scored a league-leading thirty-nine goals and notched forty-four assists during the regular season.
Miller set multiple league and team records, and was named the USHL’s “Defenseman of the Week” seven times during his two-year career with the Storm organization.
STORM’S WILMER NAMED FORWARD OF THE YEAR:
The USHL and Tri-City Storm announced Tuesday Jeremy Wilmer was named the League’s Forward of the Year for the 2021-22 season.
Wilmer finished the season with a league-leading 98 points (25-73-98) in 60 games. The 73 assists from the Boston University commit was 13 more than the next skater in the USHL. Wilmer’s 98 points was the third-most in a single season in USHL Tier I history.
The Rockville Centre, N.Y. native finished among league leaders with 30 powerplay assists (1st), 36 powerplay points (2nd) and a +38 plus-minus rating (3rd).
FORMER LOPER SANGER TO LEAD BERTRAND GIRLS BASKETBALL:
A former UNK Women’s basketball star will take her talents from the hardwood of the Health & Sports Center to Bertrand High School where she will take the reins of the girls basketball team.
Kelsey Cole, formerly Kelsey Sanger, was hired as the Bertrand High School girls basketball head coach earlier this week. As a four year starter for UNK, Sanger helped the team reach the Sweet 16 in the 2021 NCAA Tournament. She was also a three-time member of the All-MIAA team.
