RUNZA SENIORS FALL TO COLUMBUS:

The Runza Seniors were bitten once again by mistakes that gave Columbus extra bases and runs throughout seven innings, and Kearney could not contain the high-flying pitching of Tadum Bell and Ryan Eickhoff as Cornerstone Columbus won at Memorial Field 8-2 on Fan Appreciation night.

The loss drops the Runza seniors to 3-10 on the year. Kearney will head to Lincoln this weekend for the Pete/Coach K tournament where the Runza Seniors are scheduled for three contests spanning over Friday and Saturday.

HASTINGS COLLEGE BEGINS SEARCH FOR NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR:

Hastings College announced yesterday that it is launching a search for a new athletic director. B.J. Pumroy has served as the College’s athletic director since 2019.

In recent months, Pumroy hired Trey Heckadon as men’s wrestling coach and Todd Raridon as men’s basketball coach.

In a news release, the school said it is launching a search to fill the position but didn’t lay out a specific timeline.

MARTINEZ; MOTIVATION TO LEAVE HUSKERS WAS TO WIN:

Former Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez decided to use his final year of eligibility elsewhere when he transferred after the 2021 season. The ex-Huskers signal-caller landed at Kansas State.

In an interview with Big 12 Radio, the former Husker stated he wanted an opportunity to win after his up and down career at Nebraska. Martinez continued by saying that he wants to face the criticism he had at Nebraska head-on, and wants to burn the association he has with not having a winning season or a bowl game victory to his resume.

Last season, Martinez finished with 2,863 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, a 61.8% completion percentage, 525 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns. Over the course of his career, Martinez had 8,491 passing yards, 45 touchdowns, 30 interceptions, a 63.5% completion percentage, 2,301 rushing yards and 35 rushing touchdowns.

BURROUGHS QUALIFIES FOR WORLDS

Former Husker great Jordan Burroughs secured a spot on the U.S. team and will compete at the 2022 Senior World Championships on Sept. 10-18 in Belgrade, Serbia after his Final X series victory.

In the 79 kg men’s freestyle finals, the reigning world champion defeated Chance Marstellar, 4-0, in the first round of the series. In the second round, Marstellar forced a third deciding match after his 2-2 victory. In Round 3, Burroughs grabbed an early 3-0 lead and sealed the 5-0 win in the second period with a takedown

This win qualified Burroughs for his 11th World or Olympic team and gives him a chance to break the freestyle title record that he and John Smith currently share.

HUSKER T&F’s TALLEY FINISHES SIXTH IN HAMMER THROW AT NATIONALS:

Talley broke his own hammer throw school record with a mark of 234-8 (71.52m) on his third attempt. He was in fourth place entering the final three throws and ended in sixth, the same finish he had last year while at North Dakota State.

Burger Lambrechts Jr. earned his fifth career All-America honor, claiming second-team honors with a 15th-place finish in the shot put
