HUSKER VOLLEYBALL ANNOUNCES 2022 SCHEDULE:

The Nebraska volleyball program and the Big Ten Conference announced the 2022 schedule on Tuesday.

The Huskers will begin the 2022 campaign on Aug. 26-27 by hosting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Tulsa and Pepperdine in the Husker Invitational at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Nebraska will face in-state foe Creighton at the CHI Health Center Omaha – site of the 2022 NCAA Championship – on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 5 p.m. on FS1.

The Huskers’ final week of non-conference action includes a Tuesday, Sept. 13 home match against Stanford and a Sunday, Sept. 18 road trip to Kentucky. That match will be televised on ESPNU.

Nebraska begins its 20-match Big Ten schedule with a home weekend against Michigan State and Ohio State on Friday, Sept. 23 and Saturday, Sept. 24, respectively. The Huskers will then play seven of their next nine matches on the road.

The last three matches will be home matches against teams that finished in the top three of the Big Ten standings last season. The Huskers close out the conference slate against Purdue (Sunday, Nov. 20), Wisconsin (Friday, Nov. 25) and Minnesota (Saturday, Nov. 26), all at the Devaney Center.

STARS BOYS BASKETBALL SELECTED FOR HEARTLAND HOOPS HOLIDAY CLASSIC:

After a third place finish in the Class C1 Boys State Basketball Championship in March, the Kearney Catholic Stars basketball team has been selected to participate in the Heartland Hoops Classic Holiday Tournament in December for another year.

Last season, the Stars took on Class B’s Omaha Skutt Catholic, losing their only contest of the regular season to the Skyhawks 35-31. This season, Kearney Catholic will battle Sandy Creek on December 17 at 10 AM in Hastings college. Sandy Creek finished last season 15-10 overall.

OVERTON’S FLEISCHMAN NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR:

Overton boys golf coach Brian Fleischman has been awarded the Nebraska Coaches Association Coach of the year award.

Fleischman helped guide an experienced Eagles squad to the Class D State title in May. Overton rallied from over 20 strokes down during the second day of competition in North Platte to claim their first NSAA state title in boys golf since 1967.

This was Fleischman’s tenth year as head coach of the Eagles.

FREMONT-BERGAN’S McINTYRE SELECTS NEBRASKA RIVAL OVER HUSKERS:

Kade McIntyre will play his college football for one of Nebraska’s biggest rivals.

The Archbishop Bergan star announced Monday afternoon he was committed to play for Oklahoma after officially visiting the Sooners last week.

McIntyre chose Oklahoma over offers from the in-state Huskers, along with Tennessee, Iowa, Kansas State, and Minnesota.

McIntyre is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound three-star athlete, according to Rivals.com. He likely projects to play inside or outside linebacker in college, though he has the skill set to contribute on offense, too.

In helping lead Archbishop Bergan to a Class C-2 state championship last season, McIntyre caught 37 passes for 873 yards and 14 touchdowns. He added 63 tackles, including six sacks, on defense.

FOUR STAR D-LINEMAN FROM TEXAS CHOOSES HUSKERS:

Defensive lineman Riley Van Poppel, Nebraska’s third June pledge and eighth overall, rates as the top prospect yet to accept a scholarship offer from the Huskers for the Class of 2023.

Van Poppel, 6-foot-4 and 270 pounds out of Argyle, Texas, announced his commitment on Monday. He’s a four-star recruit, according to the 247Sports Composite Rating, ranked as the No. 372 player nationally and the 63rd-best prospect in Texas.

The son of former MLB pitcher Todd Van Poppel, Riley visited Nebraska over the weekend, part of a June recruiting blitz that produced prior pledges from wide receiver Jaidyn Doss and offensive lineman Brock Knutson.

Six of the committed players in this class for Nebraska are projected to play offense. Van Poppel joins defensive back Dwight Bootle on defense.

WALLACE TO RETURN FOR SENIOR YEAR FOR HUSKER SOFTBALL:

Nebraska softball senior Courtney Wallace will return to the University of Nebraska for one more season with the Husker softball program.

The All-Region right-handed pitcher announced on Monday she will use her final year of eligibility, which the NCAA granted to student-athletes due to COVID-19 interruptions.

Wallace earned NFCA Third-Team All-Midwest Region accolades this past season, as well as Big Ten All-Defensive Team honors. Wallace was honored with the Rawlings Gold Glove Award after finishing the season with 1.00 fielding percentage.

The two-time All-Region selection held a 3.12 ERA and a 17-8 record through 148 innings during the 2022 season.

HUSKER VOLLEYBALL STANDOUTS AID U21 U.S. TEAM TO GOLD:

The U.S. Women’s U21 National Team – with Nebraska middle blocker Bekka Allick and libero Lexi Rodriguez – defeated Argentina 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 25-14) late Sunday night to win the Pan American Cup at La Paz Arena in Baja California Sur.

It is the second time the U.S. has won the title. The last time was in 2017.

Allick added 14 points on 12 kills and two blocks. Rodriguez, the libero and team captain, was credited with 24 digs and 12 excellent receptions.
