RUNZA SENIORS SPLIT GRAND ISLAND DOUBLEHEADER:

The Kearney Runza Seniors battled the heat in a Grand Island doubleheader on Friday afternoon against GI Home Federal and U-Save Pharmacy, splitting the contests to move their record to 7-12 on the year.

Game one went the way for Grand Island with a big second inning as Home Federal scored runs on two Kearney errors that created a 5-0 lead that Runza could not overcome, falling 5-3.

Game two had Runza be the benefactor of three errors in the bottom of the fourth inning, where Kearney scored six runs but then allowed GI U-Save to march back scoring four runs in the top of the sixth before downing U-Save 7-4 in the final frame.

The Runza Seniors take some time off for the weekend before returning to action in the Creighton Prep tournament next week in Omaha.

NEBRASKA PITCHER ACCEPTS TEAM USA INVITE:

Nebraska pitcher Emmett Olson has accepted an invitation to the 2022 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp.

Highlighted by a five-game intrasquad Stars vs. Stripes series in North Carolina from June 30 to July 4, the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp features 48-50 of the premier non-draft eligible collegiate players.

USA Baseball will name a final 26-man Collegiate National Team roster after training camp that will represent the United States at Honkbalweek Haarlem in the Netherlands on July 9-15.

Olson posted a 3-3 record in 19 appearances on the mound, including eight starts for Nebraska in 2022. The Des Plaines, Ill., native finished the regular season ranked third in the Big Ten with a 2.86 ERA and totaled 65 strikeouts in 66 innings.

LOPERS END 25th IN D2 ALL-SPORTS TROPHY STANDINGS:

Nebraska-Kearney tallied 475.50 points to finish 25th in the race for the 2021-22 Learfield Directors’ Cup.

The Cup is the Division II “All-Sports” Trophy, given annually to the school that scores the most points at NCAA Championships over the fall, winter and spring seasons

Ranking third among MIAA schools, this is UNK’s highest place and point total in 14 years (16th/494.50; 2007-08).

The Blue & Gold scored 118.50 points in the fall, 205.0 in the winter and added 152 in the spring. Not surprisingly, the MIAA had a strong showing as seven members ranked in the top 41 and 10 in the top 88. Central Missouri (8th/671.25) and Washburn (21st/482.0) were ahead of the Lopers.
