RUNZA SENIORS WRAP UP CREIGHTON PREP TOURNAMENT WITH PERFECT GAME:
The Kearney Runza Seniors followed a perfect game pitched by Scout Simmons to end the Creighton Prep CWS Tournament on a high note at 4-2 overall, downing Brandon Valley Post 131 (South Dakota).
Simmons completed the full game with his ninth strikeout of the day, nursing a one run lead heading into the final inning. With the victory, the Runza Seniors now stand at 11-14 on the year with a busy week of contests ahead.
Runza begins the week battling Lincoln Southeast on Tuesday with first pitch at 6 PM on KGFW. The Kearney Seniors follow up their contest with a road game in North Platte on Wednesday, and wrap up the mid-week contests with a doubleheader against Lexington on Thursday evening at home.
Pregame coverage of Kearney Legion Baseball this week begins fifteen minutes prior to the start of each contest, as you can hear them all on 1340 AM, 96.1 FM, on KGFW.com, and on the free KGFW mobile app.
REBELS CLAIM COLLEGE WORLD SERIES TITLE:
The last team to get into the NCAA baseball tournament was the last team standing.
Mississippi scored twice on wild pitches in a three-run eighth inning and the Rebels won their first national baseball title, sweeping Oklahoma in the College World Series finals with a 4-2 victory Sunday.
The Rebels (42-23) became the eighth national champion since 2009 to come out of the Southeastern Conference and third straight, and the trophy will stay in the Magnolia State for another year. Mississippi State won last year.
Their only loss at the CWS was 3-2 to Arkansas on Wednesday.
AVALANCHE DETHRONE LIGHTNING FOR STANLEY CUP:
After years of playoff disappointments, the Colorado Avalanche are back atop hockey’s mountain after dethroning the two-time defending champions.
The Avalanche won the Stanley Cup for the third time in franchise history and first in more than two decades by beating the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in Game 6 of the final Sunday night.
Tampa Bay ended up two victories short of becoming the NHL’s first three-peat champion since the early 1980s New York Islanders dynasty.
HUSKERS NOUILI SUSPENDED FOR 2022 SEASON:
Nebraska football will be down a returning starter on the offensive line this fall.
Nouredin Nouili announced on social media Saturday that the NCAA informed him of a failed drug test, rendering him ineligible for the 2022 season.
Head coach Scott Frost said in a statement that Nouili will be supported during his year away from competition.
In 2021, Nouili earned a scholarship and started the final seven games of the year. He is the third starter from the end of the season to not return for 2022.
