RUNZA SENIORS FALL TO LINCOLN SOUTHEAST, TRAVEL TO NORTH PLATTE:
The Runza Seniors of Kearney played well in the opening moments of the home matchup with Lincoln Southeast’s JC Brager’s Seniors on Tuesday night, until a fifth inning flood of scores closed down the contest as Kearney fell to 11-15 on the season with the 17-3 loss.
Kearney trailed entering the fourth inning 5-2 but Blake Rehtus eliminated three batters consecutively and in the bottom of the fourth Kaleb Larson knocked a home run over the left field wall to take the contest to 5-3.
Once the scores started for JC Brager however, the scoring never stopped as they added 12 runs on 10 hits in the top of the fifth to zoom past Kearney 17-3 and close out the contest in 5 innings.
The Runza Seniors now head to North Platte for a rematch tonight and their first contest in North Platte this season. Pregame on KGFW begins at the conclusion of the POST 52 Juniors contest at about 7:15 PM.
STORM ANNOUNCES CONTRACT EXTENSION FOR GM KOEHLER:
The Tri-City Storm has announced a four-year contract extension for General Manager Jason Koehler following the organization’s record-breaking 2021-2022 Anderson Cup Championship season. SERENA WILLIAMS DOWNED IN WIMBLEDON:
Serena Williams began — and ended — her comeback at Wimbledon after 364 days out of singles competition looking very much like someone who hadn’t competed in just that long. She missed shots, shook her head, rolled her eyes.
Returning to the site of her last singles match, which she had to stop after less than a set because of an injury on June 29, 2021, and seven of her major championships, the 40-year-old Williams came within two points of victory. But she could not finish the job against an opponent making her Wimbledon debut and bowed out with a 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) loss to 115th-ranked Harmony Tan of France.
WESTBROOK STAYS WITH LAKERS FOR $47 MILLION:
Los Angeles Lakers guard Russell Westbrook is exercising his option to play for $47.1 million next season, a person with direct knowledge of the decision said Tuesday.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither Westbrook — a past NBA MVP and one of the league’s top 75 all-time players — nor the Lakers revealed the decision publicly. ESPN first reported Westbrook’s decision.
He’ll turn 34 next season, his 15th season in the NBA.
Westbrook had until Wednesday to make up his mind on the option, which will make this the fifth and final season of a $207 million contract he signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
