HUSKER ALUM CRAIG NAMED TO PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME SEMIFINALIST LIST:

A former Husker running back – as well as Super Bowl-winning coaches Mike Shanahan and Mike Holmgren – are among 54 seniors, coaches and contributors named as semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023.

The list of 25 former players includes four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Ken Anderson; do-it-all running back Roger Craig; return specialist Billy “White Shoes” Johnson; five-time Pro Bowl CB Lester Hayes.

Craig is universally known as one of the first dual threat running backs in professional football, winning three Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers in the mid-1980s. He finished his Nebraska career at No. 3 all time on the career rushing list.

NINE THOUSAND HUSKER FANS HEADING TO IRELAND:

According to an update from the Nebraska Football team, over 9000 Big Red fans have already pledged their commitment to traveling overseas to watch the Huskers in Ireland on Aug. 27 when Nebraska battles Northwestern to open the college football season in Week Zero.

The Aer Lingus Classic game officials have stated they are confident that they will be able to sell 10,000 tickets in total to Nebraska fans to fill the 47,500 seat stadium to – at minimum – 75 percent occupancy. So far, Northwestern fans have totaled nearly 3,000 tickets sold.

GRINER REMAINS DETAINED IN RUSSIA:

American basketball star Brittney Griner pleaded guilty Thursday to drug possession charges on the second day of her trial in a Russian court in a case that could see her sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.

The abrupt guilty plea by the Phoenix Mercury center and two-time Olympic gold medalist came amid a growing chorus of calls for Washington to do more to secure her freedom nearly five months after her arrest in February amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Russia over Ukraine.

A senior Russian diplomat said earlier that no action could be taken by Moscow on Griner’s case until the trial was over, and her guilty plea could be an effort by her and her advisers to expedite the court proceedings.
