RUNZA SENIORS FALL TO BEATRICE IN FRIDAY NIGHT TOURNAMENT ACTION:

The Runza Seniors of Kearney couldn’t muster the runs to keep pace with the Beatrice Legion Seniors, falling in their opening contest of the Kearney/Hastings tournament at Memorial Field 5-1. 

The loss drops Kearney to 14-17 on the season as they prepare for a doubleheader today, battling Millard North at 10 AM and the Colorado Dirt Devils at 7 PM with both games at Memorial Field. 

The Runza Seniors close the tournament on Sunday with a contest against Lincoln Northeast. Hear the regular season finale on KGFW with pregame starting at noon and first pitch set for 12:15 PM. 

 

HUSKER MEN’S HOOPS LOSES TOP ASSISTANT COACH TO OREGON:

Nebraska assistant Armon Gates is taking a job with Oregon, as announced via press release by Husker Men’s Basketball Head Coach Fred Hoiberg on Friday.

Gates, the Huskers’ longest-tenured assistant, joined the staff in 2018 under Tim Miles. He was the only assistant retained when Fred Hoiberg took the job in 2019.

Gates primarily coached Nebraska’s guards and helped NU with scouting, player development, game plans and recruiting.

 

THREE STORM PLAYERS SELECTED IN NHL DRAFT:

Three Tri-City Storm players were selected on Friday in this year’s NHL Draft. 

Current Storm forwards Daimon Gardner, Cole O’Hara, and Cameron O’Neill were each drafted by NHL member clubs in the 2022 NHL Draft. Gardner was selected 112th overall in the 4th round by the Vancouver Canucks, O’Hara was drafted 114th overall in the 4th round by the Nashville Predators, and O’Neill was selected 143rd overall in the 5th round by the Ottawa Senators. 

The Storm has had sixty-one players drafted by NHL member clubs in its twenty-two-year history.

 

HUSKER ALUM CRAIG NAMED TO PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME SEMIFINALIST LIST:

A former Husker running back – as well as Super Bowl-winning coaches Mike Shanahan and Mike Holmgren – are among 54 seniors, coaches and contributors named as semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023.

The list of 25 former players includes four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Ken Anderson; do-it-all running back Roger Craig; return specialist Billy “White Shoes” Johnson; five-time Pro Bowl CB Lester Hayes.

Craig is universally known as one of the first dual threat running backs in professional football, winning three Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers in the mid-1980s. He finished his Nebraska career at No. 3 all time on the career rushing list.
