RUNZA SENIORS END KEARNEY/HASTINGS TOURNEY 2-2; FALL TO LINCOLN NORTHEAST ON SUNDAY:
The Kearney Runza Seniors fell in 5 innings of action on Sunday to conclude the regular season at Memorial Field 14-10 to Lincoln Northeast Judd’s Brothers Seniors.
The loss wraps up the regular season for the Runza Seniors who sit at 16-18 on the year and now await their official seeding and placement for the upcoming District Baseball bracket.
Kearney will head to Duncan Field in Hastings to compete against a field consisting of: GI U-Save Pharmacy, GI Home Federal, Hastings Five Points Bank, Lexington Pinnacle Bank, North Platte FNBO Nationals, and the Scottsbluff WESTCO Zephyrs.
HUSKER FOOTBALL RECEIVES ANOTHER FOUR STAR DEFENDER:
Ashley Williams Jr. has made his decision: The Class of 2023 defensive end has committed to Nebraska.
The four-star Zachary (La.) High School product committed to the Huskers over nearly two dozen other offers, including Minnesota and Texas as his other top schools.
Williams, who is the Huskers’ 14th overall commitment and third defensive line commitment in the 2023 class, made the first official visit of his recruiting process to Nebraska on June 3-5. That wound up being one of two official visits he made and three visits overall as he made an official trip to Minnesota on June 10-12 and an unofficial visit to Texas later in June.
Williams’ commitment is another major step in the right direction for the Huskers’ continued focus on recruiting the state of Louisiana hard. He joins four-star receiver Omarion Miller as their second commitment from the state in this cycle and their fourth player from Louisiana in the last two classes (running back Ajay Allen and receiver Decoldest Crawford signed in the 2022 cycle).
SAM FOLTZ MEMORIAL HIGHWAY SET FOR JULY 16:
Weather permitting, July 15, at 3:30 p.m., a portion of Nebraska Highway 56 will be dedicated as the “Sam Foltz Memorial Highway.” The first of two signs will be unveiled for placing by the Nebraska Department of Transportation. The event will take place at the Greeley County Courthouse lawn in Greeley, Neb. The public is invited to attend.
Foltz, whose family is from the Greeley area, was a star punter for the Huskers football team until being tragically killed in a vehicle crash in Wisconsin in July 2016. Land along the stretch of highway named after Foltz was farmed by five generations of his family, including his parents Gerald and Jill Foltz.
The State Highway Commission, which oversees the naming of highways, recommended the request in December 2021. Governor Pete Ricketts signed a resolution in February naming the 12.9-mile segment of Highway 56 after Foltz.
DJOKOVIC WINS 7th WIMBLEDON:
Novak Djokovic used his steady brilliance to beat the ace-delivering, trick-shot-hitting, constantly chattering Kyrgios 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3) on Sunday for a fourth consecutive championship at the All England Club, seventh overall there, and 21st from all Grand Slam tournaments.
Among men, only Roger Federer owns more Wimbledon titles than Djokovic, with eight, and only Rafael Nadal owns more major trophies, with 22.
