RUNZA SENIORS SEASON ENDS IN HASTINGS, FALLING TO NORTH PLATTE:

A stretch of errors mixed with four runs given up in the first inning doomed the Runza Seniors from the start as Kearney could not keep pace with the FNBO Nationals of North Platte, ending their season in the A7 District tournament with an 8-0 loss. 

The loss ends Kearney’s season at 18-20 overall. 

 

POST 52 WRAPS UP DISTRICTS WITH LOSS TO HASTINGS:

The POST 52 Kearney Juniors were aiming to battle through the district tournament, but ended falling short in the A7 Juniors District Tournament in Lexington with a loss to Hastings Johnson Imperial Homes 6-3. 

The loss does not mean the end, however, as the POST 52 Juniors will host the Juniors State Tournament throughout the weekend. As a host site, POST 52 is granted a spot in the tournament. Seeding is expected to be announced on Wednesday. 

 

BILL BUSCH SPORTS NIGHTLY COMMENTS:

BUSCH – LOOKING FOR AN ACCURATE KICKER:

Special Team coach Bill Busch joined the Sports Nightly crew last night and spoke about what he looks for in qualities for a place kicker… 

Last season, Husker kickers went a combined 8-16 for field goal attempts. 

 

BUSCH – BLEEKRODE BRINGS STEADINESS TO KICKER:

The Husker football team hit the transfer portal early and often this summer, bringing in numerous players at different positions. Special Teams coordinator Bill Busch described what he was looking for in the portal… 

Timmy Bleekrode is aiming to compete for the number one spot at kicker this fall, as the Furman transfer comes in with three years of eligibility remaining. 

 

BUSCH – BUSCHINI THE GUY HEADING INTO THE FALL:

Special Teams coordinator for the Huskers Bill Busch joined Sports Nightly Monday night to talk about the third phase of the game that has haunted Nebraska throughout Scott Frost’s tenure. Busch did add that he’s excited to announce his new number one punter… 

Buschini transfers in from Montana and was a full participant in spring practices, booming a 60 plus yard punt in the Red-White Spring game. 

 

BUSCH – PALMER EXCITING AND RELIABLE ON RETURNS:

A big question mark entering the off-season for Nebraska Football was the special teams return game. Bill Busch, special teams coordinator, joined Sports Nightly on Monday and reaffirmed that LSU transfer Trey Palmer is the guy he trusts… 

Palmer had a return score on kick return in his tenure at LSU. 

 

HUSKERS’ NELSON, NEWSOME, AND VOKOLEK REPRESENT NEBRASKA AT BIG TEN MEDIA DAYS:

Scott Frost will be joined by three Husker standouts in Indianapolis for Big Ten media days next week.

Junior defensive back Quinton Newsome, junior outside linebacker Garrett Nelson and senior tight end Travis Vokolek are set to represent Nebraska at Lucas Oil Stadium for the conference’s annual kickoff event on July 26 and 27.

The Huskers will talk to the media on day 1 of the event, July 26.

Nebraska will open the season against Northwestern on Aug. 27. The game will be played in Ireland and kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m.

 

HUSKERS BASEBALL’S ANDERSON, MATTHEWS NAMED TO LEAGUE ALL-STAR GAMES:

Max Anderson has been named a Cape Cod League All-Star for the second consecutive summer, following a vote of the league managers.

In 31 games with the Gatemen, Anderson is hitting .273 with one home run, five doubles, 10 runs, 12 RBI and 12 walks. As a sophomore with the Huskers this spring, the Omaha native hit .299 with 12 doubles, three triples, 10 home runs, 45 RBI and 47 runs.

Additionally, Brice Matthews has been added to the Great Plains Division roster for the Northwoods League All-Star Game. Through 36 games with the St. Cloud Rox, Matthews ranks in the top 15 of the Northwoods League in five offensive categories.

As a sophomore with the Huskers in the spring, Matthews hit .261 with eight doubles, seven home runs, 29 RBI, 31 runs and 12 stolen bases.

 

NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL EARNS AVCA TEAM ACADEMIC AWARD:

The AVCA announced on Monday that both the Nebraska volleyball and beach volleyball programs have received the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2021-22 academic year.

The Husker volleyball program carried a 3.43 GPA in 2021-22, while the beach volleyball team recorded a 3.52 GPA. 

The Nebraska volleyball program has earned 18 AVCA Team Academic Awards all-time, while the beach volleyball program collected its third honor. 

 

HUSKER WOMEN’S SHELLEY SHINES AT NBA SUMMIT:

Nebraska women’s basketball guard Jaz Shelley was one of just 15 student-athletes from around the nation invited to attend the inaugural NBA Student-Athlete Summit during Summer League action in Las Vegas (July 12-15).

Shelley spent the week participating in panel discussions, networking sessions and behind-the-scenes tours of the NBA Summer League. Shelley, a 22-year-old sports media and communication major at Nebraska, was the only active student-athlete from the Big Ten Conference to attend the event, which is a branch of the NBA’s SALA platform/

The focus of the NBA Student-Athlete Summit is to bring the best and brightest college women’s basketball players who aspire to work in sports together in order to connect with NBA team and league executives along with broadcast partners who are interested in filling future roles across their organizations.
