BARRETT RUUD – SPORTS NIGHTLY COMMENTS:

RUUD – NICK HENRICH AND LUKE REIMERS READY TO DOMINATE AGAIN:

Returning starters for the Blackshirts last season, Nick Henrich and Luke Reimer are ready to make another big splash at their linebacker spots. Linebackers coach Barrett Ruud adds that he feels his two stars are putting in the work to get better…

The Huskers defense will rely on the savvy experience at linebacker as new faces will appear on the defensive line and defensive backfield.

RUUD – CLEMENTS AND HAUSMANN BENEFITTED FROM SPRING INJURIES:

Linebackers coach for the Huskers Barrett Ruud joined the Sports Nightly desk Wednesday night and stated that due to injuries in the spring, some players stepped up and earned valuable reps to get better; including third year linebacker Etava Clements…

Clements has seen some time in reserve action and special teams the past three seasons and aims to be a main rotation piece for the Blackshirts this fall.

RUUD – HAUSMANN CONTINUES TREND TOWARDS PLAYING TIME:

Linebackers coach for the Nebraska Football team Barrett Ruud joined Sports Nightly Wednesday night and heaped high praise on talented Columbus freshman Ernest Hausmann. Hausmann joined the Huskers in January with an early graduation, and the time spent in Lincoln seems to have paid off…

Hausmann was a machine at Columbus, racking up 190 total tackles in three years of varsity play as a Discoverer.

LINCOLN NATIVE NGOYI PICKS CYCLONES OVER HUSKERS:

Lincoln Native and current Lincoln High Link Beni Ngoyi announced his commitment Wednesday, as the three-star receiver chose Iowa State over his hometown Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Washington Huskies.

Ngoyi is ranked the No. 7 player in Nebraska, the No. 103 wide receiver in the country for the 2023 class and a top-800 player nationwide

Iowa State was one of the last programs to offer Ngoyi on March 21, 2022, but the Cyclones were the first of his final three. He took an official visit to Iowa State on June 10, one week after an official visit to Washington.

In his junior season with Lincoln, Ngoyi averaged 51.9 yards per game and recorded six touchdowns.

CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR DEMANDS EXPLANATION FROM UCLA FOR BIG TEN MOVE:

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is demanding an explanation from UCLA officials about their move to the Big Ten Conference.

Newsom attended Wednesday’s UC Board of Regents meeting in San Francisco. The closed-door meeting was the first since UCLA and Southern California announced on June 30 that the schools would be leaving the Pac-12 Conference for the Big Ten in 2024. USC is a private institution and not part of the UC system.

Newsom — an ex officio member of the Board of Regents — is among others asking how the move will benefit all student-athletes, as well as how to mitigate the financial effects it will cause to UC Berkeley, California’s other public university in the Pac 12.

UCLA and UC Berkeley have played each other in football since 1923.

BRYAN APPLEWHITE SPORTS NIGHTLY COMMENTS:

APPLEWHITE – JOHNSON IS DANGEROUS IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE FIELD:

Running backs coach for the Huskers Bryan Applewhite joined Sports Nightly Tuesday night and spoke on the dangerous Rahmir Johnson, who returns as Nebraska’s leading rusher from 2022…

Johnson is the leading returning rusher from last year’s Huskers, and is predicted to be the starting running back heading into fall camp.

APPLEWHITE – YANT CONTINUES TO WORK HARD:

Running Backs coach for Nebraska Football Bryan Applewhite joined Sports Nightly Tuesday and was asked where Jaquez Yant was in his continued improvement over the past season…

Yant had some memorable moments last year including a big run against Northwestern, but is looking for more consistent play especially in short yardage opportunities.

APPLEWHITE – EXCITED TO SEE ERVIN RETURN TO FULL HEALTH:

Nebraska Running Back Gabe Ervin injured his knee in Week Four last season, ending his fall season and holding him out of spring camp this off-season. Running Backs coach Bryan Applewhite said he’s anxious to see what Ervin can bring to the field…

Ervin maintained his true redshirt after only appearing in four games last season. He is also the first true freshman to ever start a season opener in Husker Football history.
