MILLARD SOUTH CLAIMS JUNIORS STATE TITLE OVER GRAND ISLAND:

In a state tournament that began with Grand Island and Millard South ended in a rematch with Five Points Bank and the 52’s Patriots, as Millard South claimed the 11-6 victory Wednesday evening and the Juniors State Tournament title at Memorial Field. 

Grand Island was given their first loss of the tournament on Saturday afternoon, falling to Millard South 14-3 in the opening contest of the tournament held in Kearney. Five Points Bank would rattle off four consecutive victories to work themselves into a chance for the state title; downing Lincoln Southwest, Creighton Prep, Kearney, and Millard North in the process. 

 

NEBRASKA SHRINE BOWL COACHES ANNOUNCED FOR 65th ANNUAL GAME:

The Nebraska Shrine Bowl Executive Board announced the coaching staffs for next year’s 65th annual Shrine Bowl yesterday. 

The North team will be led by Bellevue West Head Coach Michael Huffman, with assistant coaches Larry Martin of Omaha North and Kurt Frenzen of Columbus Lakeview. The South team will be led by Mark McLaughlin of Platteview with assistants Brandon Cool of Kearney High and Kyle Peterson of Aurora. 

Each coach can select three current assistant coaches to join their staff for a total of nine additional assistant coaches per team. The 65th Annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl game will be held at UNK’s Ron and Carol Cope Stadium on Saturday, June 3 2023.

 

STORM PLAYERS TO REPRESENT USA IN GRETZKY CUP:

Tri-City Storm President of Hockey Operations/Head Coach Anthony Noreen and multiple Storm players are set to represent Team USA at the upcoming Hlinka-Gretzky Cup in Canada.

Noreen will lead the USA team in the annual Under-18 tournament when the event officially gets underway on Sunday, July 31st. Storm players Tanner Adams, Charlie Kinsman, Ryan Smith, and Storm draft pick A.J. Lacroix will skate for Team USA in the event. Team USA will face Slovakia Friday morning.

 

CRAIG ELIMINATED FROM PRO FOOTBALL CLASS OF 2023 CONTENTION:

Former San Francisco 49ers running back and Husker alum Roger Craig, the first player in NFL history to total 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in the same season, did not advance as a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2023.

Craig was a three-time Super Bowl champion and four-time Pro Bowl player. He played 11 NFL seasons, and his teams advanced to the playoffs in each of those years. He played his final season in 1993.

The Hall of Fame on Wednesday announced 12 finalists in the senior and coach/contributor categories, and Craig was not included.

 

TREY PALMER ADDED TO PAL HORNUNG WATCH LIST:

Nebraska wide receiver Trey Palmer has been named to the 2022 Paul Hornung Award watch list, which was announced Thursday afternoon. The award is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football.

Palmer is in his first season at Nebraska after spending the last three years at LSU. He totaled 41 receptions in his career while also returning kicks for the Tigers.

Last season, he hauled in 30 passes for 344 yards and three touchdowns, ranking third on the team in touchdown receptions and fourth in catches. He also returned 18 punts for 115 yards and seven kickoffs for 142 yards. In 2020, he averaged 34.4 yards per kickoff return, highlighted by a 93-yard touchdown against South Carolina, while catching 10 passes for 108 yards.

 

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL – SPORTS NIGHTLY COMMENTS:

BECKTON – FIDONE WORKING HARD TO COMPETE THIS YEAR:

Another season of spring practices and another injury to standout tight end Thomas Fidone. Last year’s prize of the recruiting puzzle for Nebraska Football, Fidone saw limited action in 2021 due to an injury suffered in spring camp. Fidone was once again limited this spring due to another injury, and Tight Ends coach Sean Beckton added that the freshman is continuing to work to get back to the field… 

Fidone returned for action in the final weeks of the season, seeing action as a blocker against Wisconsin and Iowa.

 

BECKTON – HICKMAN NEEDS TO ADD WEIGHT FOR DURABILITY:

Tight ends coach for Nebraska Sean Beckton spoke on Wednesday’s Sports Nightly and was hesitant to give too many injury details for his battered group of tight ends. Included in the injury list, Omaha Burke alum Chris Hickman who was injured in the spring… 

Hickman had three receptions for 90 yards last season, and was a key contributor in blocking situations for the Huskers. Nebraska enters their third day of fall camp on Friday.

 

BECKTON – BREWINGTON WORKING TOWARDS MORE REPS:

Nebraska Football Tight Ends coach Sean Beckton joined the Sports Nightly crew on Wednesday and gave high praise to reserve Chancellor Brewington. Brewington was known for his big blocks last season, and Beckton expects that same level of play… 

Brewington caught three passes for 20 yards and a touchdown last season. The Huskers take on Northwestern on August 27 in Ireland. 

 

FALCONS SIGN FORMER HUSKER DANIELS:

The Falcons signed defensive tackle Darrion Daniels to their 90-man roster, the team announced on Wednesday. His addition comes after the first training camp practice, adding more depth and competition to a position group with some openings in the rotation.

Daniels spent the 2020 season with the San Francisco 49ers. He was a practice-squad elevation three times and made another appearance after being promoted to the active roster late in the year. He had four total tackles in those experiences.

The Nebraska product stands 6-foot-3 and 311 pounds was signed with San Francisco in 2020 as an undrafted free agent.

 

BENINTENDI TRADED FROM ROYALS TO YANKEES:

The New York Yankees acquired All-Star outfielder Andrew Benintendi from the Kansas City Royals for three minor league pitchers on Wednesday night in what could be the first in a flurry of moves ahead of next week’s trade deadline.

The AL East leaders sent right-handers Chandler Champlain and Beck Way to the Royals along with left-hander T.J. Sikkema.

A 28-year-old left-handed hitter, Benintendi was among 10 Royals who missed a four-game series at Toronto from July 14-17 because he was not vaccinated. Benintendi lost $186,813 of the $8.5 million salary he won in an arbitration case against the Royals.
