Johnson bill gives preference to freight rail

By Brent Barnett Aug 5, 2022 | 1:28 PM

A new bill has been introduced to the US House addressing gridlock throughout the supply chain.

South Dakota Republican Congressman Dusty Johnson says the Freights First Act prioritizes the movement of goods by freight rail. He says Amtrak currently has a statutory right of track preference over freight railroads.

“It’s tremendously disruptive,” Johnson said. “I understand why we do it during a normal time, but during a national supply chain crunch I think it’s time that we give freight a little bit of priority as well.”

He tells Brownfield the legislation increases access to ag products, ultimately benefiting farmers.
