HUSKER v. NORTHWESTERN – POSTGAME COMMENTS:

FROST – ONSIDE KICK WAS HEAD COACH CALL:

Head Coach Scott Frost already has a candidate for the most head-scratching call of the 2022 college football season. Up eleven points in the third quarter and appearing to have momentum, the Huskers head coach elected to attempt an onside kick. After that moment, the Huskers could not regain full strength and fell to Northwestern 31-28. Frost addressed the call in his postgame comments…

Frost’s hot seat may have now gone nuclear as the Huskers return back to Lincoln to battle FCS opponent North Dakota to open Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

FROST – THERE WILL BE MANY MESSAGES FOR THE TEAM:

Head Coach of the Huskers Scott Frost addressed the media after gathering his 30th loss during his tenure at his alma mater. He was asked what the message will be heading into this week with North Dakota…

Frost and the Huskers will look to open Memorial Stadium with a win to even their record on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2:30 PM.

FROST – I LOVE NEBRASKA; WILL KEEP FIGHTING:

Scott Frost endured another grueling press conference after the tenth consecutive one score loss after dropping the Northwestern contest 31-28 in Ireland. In closing, Frost was asked if he would consider stepping down from his duties…

The Huskers will keep fighting for their season as they open Memorial Stadium this weekend taking on North Dakota at 2:30 PM on Saturday.

THOMPSON – MUST CONTINUE TO TRY TO BE PERFECT:

New Huskers quarterback Casey Thompson had a thrilling start to his Big Red career including two highlight reel plays that nearly toppled Northwestern. Despite the former Longhorns’ heroics, Nebraska still fell 31-28. Thompson said in his postgame comments he has to keep getting better…

Thompson put up 355 yards, the most of a debut quarterback in their first start for the Big Red.

VOKALEK – WORLD ISN’T BURNING:

Offensive captain and tight end for the Huskers Travis Vokalek spoke in his postgame comments when asked what he has said to his teammates to help them through another one-score loss…

Vokalek had a career day with five receptions for 63 yards and was critical in several third down conversions against Northwestern.

NELSON – SEASON ISN’T OVER YET:

Nebraska native and edge rusher Garrett Nelson was somber during his postgame comments, but shared what his message to the team will continue to be throughout the next week of practice…

The Huskers face North Dakota at Memorial Stadium to attempt to even their record on the season.

LOPER VOLLEYBALL CLOSES ROSELLA MEIER TOURNAMENT WITH ALL-TIME CLASSIC:

The 10th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team fought off match point in the fourth set and was hot early and late to slip past 30th-ranked Central Washington (-21, 18-25, 20-25, -24, -10) Saturday night at the Health & Sports Center.

The match was the 12th and final of the annual Rosella Meier Fall Classic. The Lopers and No. 2 Washburn both went 4-0 on the weekend with CWU and Sioux Falls sporting 2-2 marks.

The Lopers led both the first and fifth sets 6-0 but CWU, who made the second round of the NCAA Tournament last fall, was in control much of the night. After trailing in kills, digs and blocks most of the way, UNK ended up with eight more digs, the same amount of kills (59) and six less blocks.

UNK hosts NAIA Friends (Kan.) University Tuesday at 7 p.m. A junior varsity match will be held prior at 5 p.m.

HUSKER VOLLEYBALL DEFENDS LINCOLN IN OPENING TOURNAMENT:

The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team picked up its third straight sweep to close the Ameritas Players Challenge, topping Pepperdine 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-22). The Huskers moved to 3-0 on the season in front of 8,066 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Madi Kubik recorded a match-high 11 kills and added six digs, two blocks and a service ace. The senior notched double-digit kills in all three matches at the Ameritas Players Challenge.

The Huskers are at home on Thursday vs. Loyola Marymount at 6 p.m.

UNK SOCCER EARNS SUNDAY TIE:

The Nebraska-Kearney women’s soccer team, despite being a player down, tied Southwest Minnesota State, 0-0, Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

The Lopers are now 0-1-1 with the Mustangs at 0-0-2. This is the first-year college soccer isn’t playing overtime during the regular season.

UNK was dealt a blow about 25 minutes into the game when 2021 All-MIAA selection and defender Lily Engeman (Olathe, Kan.) was given a red card for tackling a Mustang. Because she was the last line of defense in a breakaway situation, she was removed from the game and UNK went with nine field players the rest of the way.

UNK heads to Colorado Mesa (0-2-0) and Western Colorado (0-2-0) next weekend.

HAWAII CLAIMS LITTLE LEAGUE TITLE:

For a week and a half at the Little League World Series, no team came close to Hawaii. The championship Sunday was no different.

Hawaii got back-to-back homers from Kekoa Payanal and Kama Angell in the first inning, sparking a 13-3 win in just four innings over Curacao.

The LLWS title is Hawaii’s fourth. It won in 2018 and this same Honolulu team finished third last year, when COVID-19 travel restrictions prevented international teams from participating.

McILROY MAKES COMEBACK TO WIN FEDEX CUP:

This year it became easy to overlook Rory McIlroy’s four majors, 30 wins on four continents and two years at No. 1 in the world. He has been viewed mostly as the strongest voice and staunchest defender of the PGA Tour in its battle against Saudi-funded LIV Golf.

Perhaps it was only fitting that a most tumultuous year for the PGA Tour culminated Sunday with McIlroy holding its biggest prize.

Six shots behind before the Tour Championship started, 10 shots back after two holes, McIlroy rallied from a six-shot deficit in the final round against the No. 1 player in the world and closed with a 4-under 66 to become the first three-time winner of the FedEx Cup.
