KEARNEY HIGH VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN FOUR TO GINW:

An inspired rally from Kearney High wasn’t enough to overcome Northwest in the Bearcats home opener last night, as Kearney fell in four sets to the Vikings, giving Northwest their first win on the season.

Kearney struggled to maintain consistency in the first set falling 25-12, but would find their rhythm late in the second tying the set at 23 all. Northwest would score the next two, winning the second set 25-23.

The Bearcats’ began to ride their momentum in the third, as Avery Franzen connected on four consecutive ace serves and Kiara Dutenhoffer electrified with several kills from the left side. Kearney won the third 25-17.

The final set went back and forth with several lead changes, eventually resulting in a 25-22 victory in the fourth set and the match going to Northwest.

Kearney will be back at Kearney High to battle Lincoln Southwest on Thursday night with first serve set for 6:30 PM.

UNK VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS FRIENDS; PREPARES FOR KENTUCKY WESLEYAN:

The now ninth-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team needed just an hour to sweep NAIA Friends University Tuesday night at the Health & Sports Center.

The Lopers improve to 5-0 while the Falcons, from Wichita, fall to 2-6. Prior to first serve, the junior varsity teams from each school played a best-of-three match.

With another tournament weekend coming up, head coach Rick Squiers subbed early and often. Seventeen Lopers took to the court with nine registering a kill, 13 having a dig and six having at least one block. UNK out hit Friends by a .279 to a negative .071 (14-20-85) margin.

UNK leaves today for Owensboro, Ky., and the 13-team Kentucky Wesleyan Invite. The Lopers face Shorter (Ga.) and Kentucky State on Friday and Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) and St. Anselm (N.H). on Saturday.

SCOTT FROST – HUSKER FOOTBALL PRACTICE COMMENTS:

FROST – EFFORT WAS THERE; HAVE TO EXECUTE IN BIG PLAYS:

Head Coach for the Huskers Scott Frost met with the media after Tuesday’s practice and spoke about the team’s effort from the Northwestern game, as the team fell short once again…

Frost added he’s looking forward to seeing how the team responds this week against an improved North Dakota team.

FROST – RUN SCHEME NEEDED CREATIVITY:

Head Coach Scott Frost doubled down on his postgame comments from Saturday’s loss to Northwestern saying that the Big Red offense needs to get better at running the football more creatively…

The Huskers were barely over a hundred yards rushing with the majority coming off of a 40 yard scamper by Anthony Grant for a score.

FROST – OFFENSE LOOKED CREATIVE, GOOD IN FIRST HALF:

Nebraska turned over play calling duties from Scott Frost last season to new offensive coordinator Mark Whipple for this year. Frost mentioned after Tuesday’s practice he liked what he saw from the offense in the first half against Northwestern…

Frost added that the run game will need to become more creative to beat Big Ten opponents into conference play.

FROST – TEAM IS DISAPPOINTED BUT EXCITED; A LOT TO PROVE:

Scott Frost’s hot seat has only gotten hotter since arriving back to Lincoln from Ireland after another devastating loss to Northwestern. The Huskers Head Coach said that this team is still ready to make their mark…

The Huskers will aim to please on Saturday against North Dakota at Memorial Stadium.

FROST – PRACTICE SCHEDULE FOR THE WEEK CAN BE TOUGH:

The Huskers returned from Ireland off of a loss to Northwestern immediately getting into game prep for their second contest of the year against North Dakota. Head Coach Scott Frost details what the week of practice looks like…

The Huskers will have a full-pad Wednesday practice and will have a full recovery and walk-through practice on Friday prior to the North Dakota matchup.

FROST – TOO MANY DROPS FROM OFFENSE:

Nebraska Head Coach Scott Frost was asked what the biggest improvement the Huskers will need to make from Week Zero to Week One. Frost stated he wants to see less drops from his receivers…

The Huskers had six recorded drops in the contest against Northwestern, as both resulted in interceptions for the Wildcats.

FROST – NORTH DAKOTA PREVIEW:

Head Coach Scott Frost previewed what the Huskers will see from North Dakota after Tuesday’s practice – even adding some humor along the way…

Nebraska opens as favorites over the FCS home opener at Memorial Stadium.

FORMER HUSKERS NAMED TO NFL ROSTERS:

Yesterday was the deadline for NFL teams to finalize their 53-man active rosters, making for an uneasy day for many players battling for the final one or two spots on a team.

That includes several former Huskers. Here’s a look at who received news — good and bad.

Samori Toure got good news. The seventh-round pick made a splash during fall camp and led the Green Bay Packers in receiving yards during three preseason games.

Austin Allen received bad news. Allen did not crack the New York Giants’ roster but is expected to join the team’s practice squad assuming he clears waivers.

JoJo Domann heard good news. Going undrafted wasn’t the former Nebraska nickel’s plan, but he’s made the most of it. That won’t surprise many Husker fans, who know all about Domann’s toughness and resolve.

Ben Stille got bad news. He won’t initially be on the Miami Dolphins’ roster but appears to be a fit for the team’s practice squad.

Devine Ozigbo heard bad news. The former Nebraska running back was waived by the Denver Broncos but could go to the practice squad.

Cam Taylor-Britt is headed to the injured reserve list. The Cincinnati Bengals’ second-round draft pick earlier this summer had surgery on his core and missed the entire preseason.

Kicker Brett Maher was cut by the Dallas Cowboys, but he’s likely to return to the team.
