UNK FOOTBALL WIN IN JOPLIN OVER SCRAPPY LIONS:
The Nebraska Kearney defense held Missouri Southern State to 187 yards, had its first pick six in six years and the offense grinded out 331 rushing yards as No. 14 Lopers beat the Lions, 24-7, Thursday night in Joplin.
This was the season-opener for both with UNK now having won five straight in the series and recording the 600th win in program history.
UNK led 10-7 in the fourth quarter and could’ve salted things away earlier but three long drives (68, 62 and 74 yards) yielded no points thanks to two missed field goals and a Lions stand at the one on the final play of the first half.
The defense held strong all night with All-American safety Darius Swanson (Aurora, Colo.) stepping in front of a Dawson Herl pass on second down and bringing it back 18 yards for six points and a comfortable 17-7 lead.
UNK hosts nationally-ranked Pittsburg State next Thursday night at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium. The Gorillas took care of Central Missouri, 21-10, in its season-opener tonight in Kansas.
HUSKER VOLLEYBALL TOPS LOYOLA MARYMOUNT:
The No. 2 Nebraska volleyball team picked up its fourth sweep in a row to start the season with a 25-17, 25-16, 25-17 victory over Loyola Marymount in the first match of the Husker Invitational on Thursday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
A crowd of 8,099 saw the Huskers (4-0) hit .363 to turn aside the Lions (1-3). Nebraska played two setters for the first time this season with Nicklin Hames leading the way with 22 assists and Anni Evans contributing nine assists.
The Huskers are at home again on Saturday, hosting Ole Miss at 7 p.m. at the Devaney Center.
KEARNEY FOOTBALL READIES FOR HOME OPENER AGAINST FREMONT:
After winning their Week 1 matchup on the road at Lincoln East, the Kearney Bearcats look to continue their winning ways against Fremont as they open up Ron & Carol Cope Stadium tonight.
The Bearcats were outgained by Lincoln East last week but won the turnover battle, creating four takeaways that kept the Spartans out of the endzone. Fremont has played two contests this season, taking early leads against both Columbus and Papillion-LaVista South, but falling in both contests as the Tigers enter at 0-2.
The KGFW High School Football Preview Show recaps the week in high school football from last week and previews this week’s action beginning at 6 PM on KGFW, with live pregame coverage starting at 6:30 PM and kickoff set for 7 PM.

HUSKER MEN’S BASKETBALL TO VISIT COLORADO FOR EXHIBITION MATCHUP:
The Nebraska men’s basketball program will travel to Colorado for a charity exhibition with the Buffaloes on Sunday, Oct. 30. Ticket proceeds from the matchup will go to survivors and first responders of last December’s Marshall Fires in Boulder County.
Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. (central) from the CU Events Center in Boulder.
The two long-time rivals met in a charity exhibition game last season at Nebraska, with the Cornhuskers taking an 82-67 decision in a contest that benefited several Lincoln-area organizations affected by COVID-19.
Nebraska returns two of its top four scorers for Fred Hoiberg, who begins his fourth season at Nebraska.
WILSON SIGNS MASSIVE EXTENSION WITH BRONCOS:
Russell Wilson’s five-year, $245 million extension includes a $50 million singing bonus, $77 million in the first eight months and a whopping $165 million in guarantees — all before he takes his first snap for the Denver Broncos.
Wilson didn’t want to handicap general manager George Paton as he builds his roster around him. So, he took $49 million on average in new money, $1 million less than Aaron Rodgers did with his four-year, $200 million deal earlier this year to stay in Green Bay.
Wilson comes in with the third-most lucrative deal in the NFL, behind Deshaun Waton’s fully guaranteed $230 million deal with Cleveland and the $189.5 million in guarantees that Kyler Murray received in his five-year, $230.5 million deal with Arizona.
