New math standards for Nebraska schools, which were approved Friday, will put extra emphasis on data and statistics.

The standards also prepare middle school students better for algebra in high school, officials say.

Members of the state board of education approved the standards, which are a rewrite of the standards put in place 7 years ago in 2015.

Under the new standards, school districts must adopt the new standards or equivalent, district-made standards within a year.
