KEARNEY FOOTBALL UPENDS BELLEVUE WEST:
The Bearcats stun Bellevue West once again on the road. For the second time in two years, Kearney upset a Top Three rated Thunderbird squad for their fourth consecutive win on the season, toppling Bell West 35-34 Thursday night.
In a back and forth game of big plays, Kearney’s defense forced five turnovers but yet still allowed Bellevue West to build a 28-14 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Kearney struck back on a short touchdown run by Ethan Kowalek, followed by a turnover and another short score by quarterback Treyven Beckman to tie the contest. The Thunderbirds then picked apart the Bearcat defense enroute to the leading score with 1:40 remaining. However, the extra point was blocked by safety Zander Reuling, leading to the most epic of finishes.
Kearney’s offense sputtered, going nowhere on their first play then a false start moving the Bearcats back to 2nd and fifteen. Zander Reuling had all the room he needed and found a crease to take a pass from Beckman 69 yards for a score with the true PAT, as Kearney would hold on to win 35-34.
Kearney improves to 4-0 on the season, dropping Bellevue West to 3-2 in the process, and now begins district play against North Platte next Friday at home.

CHIEFS OUTDUEL CHARGERS IN ARROWHEAD:
In a showdown between the Chiefs and Chargers, two of the league’s best teams led by two of the game’s bright young quarterbacks, an unheralded seventh-round draft pick who a few years ago was working alongside his mother in a Wendy’s restaurant stole the show.
The Chiefs’ Jaylen Watson picked off Justin Herbert at the goal line early in the fourth quarter Thursday night, headed the other way and was never touched on a 99-yard go-ahead touchdown that propelled Kansas City to a 27-24 victory.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 235 yards with TD passes to Jerick McKinnon and Justin Watson, and fill-in kicker Matt Ammendola was perfect in place of injured Harrison Butker. But it was the Chiefs’ defense, and Watson’s highlight-reel interception, that allowed Kansas City (2-0) to overcome its early problems in an early divisional test.
