Falls are the leading cause of injury and death for those 65 and older according to the CDC. Last year alone, CHI Health Good Samaritan admitted 143 older adults for fall-related injuries. Fortunately, most falls can be prevented.

The community is invited to Good Samaritan’s Fall Prevention Clinic from 11 am to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the Peterson Senior Activity Center, 2020 West 11th St., Kearney to learn more about fall prevention. Health professionals, including internist Dr. Bhavish Aubeelauck, will provide free fall risk assessments including blood pressure checks, diabetic foot evaluations and balance testing.

Educational information about strokes, diabetes, alternative fitness classes and assistive devices will be available. In addition, Good Samaritan staff will help participants complete a home safety assessment addressing fall hazards like rugs, cords, lighting, handrails and non-slip footwear.

“The chance of falling increases with age, and the risk is higher with certain chronic diseases, such as a history of stroke, arthritis, diabetes, dementia and Parkinson’s disease,” explained Tracy Dethlefs, trauma prevention coordinator at Good Samaritan. “Our team can help participants assess their risk.”

Other risk factors for falls include muscle weakness, difficulty walking and using medications—especially those for anxiety, depression or difficulty sleeping, which can cause dizziness or confusion. Poor vision and environmental hazards also contribute to an increased risk of falling.
