LOPER FOOTBALL DOMINATES HAYS:
Quarterback TJ Davis threw three touchdown passes and the defense had three interceptions to help No. 19/23 Nebraska Kearney pull away from rival Fort Hays State, 38-20, Saturday night at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.
The Lopers (4-1) snap a nine-game, 17-year losing streak to the Tigers and now lead the all-time series by a 35-32-1 margin. It is also the first win for Head Coach Josh Lynn over the Tigers. In his 2016 finale at Eastern New Mexico,Lynn lost to FHSU in the Heart of Texas Bowl.
Hays made it 14-13 with just under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter but was wide left on the PAT. The Lopers responded with 24 unanswered points over the next 12 minutes to salt things away. The Tigers threw a short TD pass with a second remaining to finish the scoring.
Hays out gained UNK 370-297 but also ran 11 more plays and tallied 70 yards in the final minutes.
UNK heads to Missouri Western State (2-3) next Saturday afternoon at four. The Griffons led Northwest 3-0 at the half but eventually fell in Maryville, 16-3.

HUSKER VOLLEYBALL DOMINATES ROAD TOUR:
The No. 3 Nebraska volleyball team earned a hard-fought 3-1 win at Maryland on Sunday afternoon.
The Huskers improved to 12-1 (4-0 Big Ten) on the season with their fifth straight win. Nebraska’s 12-1 start is its best since 2018.
Maryland, the No. 1 blocking team in the country, out-blocked the Huskers 17-13. But the Huskers won the serve game with seven aces and five errors compared to four aces and six errors by the Terrapins.
Whitney Lauenstein had 11 kills, seven digs, six blocks and four aces.
The Huskers are on the road again this week at Michigan State on Thursday (7 p.m. CT) and at Michigan on Saturday (6 p.m. CT). Hear both games on KGFW with pregame a half hour prior to first serve.
WISCONSIN FIRES CHRYST AFTER SLOW START:
Wisconsin fired football coach Paul Chryst on Sunday after the team’s 2-3 start.
Athletic director Chris McIntosh said in a news conference Sunday night that he met with Chryst in the morning and had an extensive discussion with him, leading to the decision to make a change.
Defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard will serve as interim coach.
The decision to fire Chryst came one day after Wisconsin lost 34-10 to Illinois, coached by former Badgers coach Bret Bielema. Wisconsin also fell 52-21 to Ohio State on Sept. 24, one of its worst losses in recent memory, and lost 17-14 at home against Washington State on Sept. 10 as a heavy favorite.
Chryst, 56, who was born in Madison, finishes 67-26 in seven-plus seasons at Wisconsin, his alma mater. He won 10 games or more in four of his first five seasons with the Badgers, winning a Cotton Bowl, an Orange Bowl and three Big Ten West Division titles.
HUSKER SOFTBALL SWEEPS KANSAS IN FALL DOUBLEHEADER:
The Huskers took on the Jayhawks in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, claiming victories in both games. Nebraska claimed game one 5-4 and then finished the day with an 11-1 victory in game two.
Nebraska returns to action next weekend for the Big Red Fall Classic. NU will face Colorado State in a doubleheader on Saturday, Oct. 8 starting at 12:30. On Sunday, the Huskers will face UNO at 10 a.m. and CSU at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free to the public.
UNK SOCCER FALLS TO JETS:
Scottish junior Rachel Wolecki tallied a rebound goal in the 15th minute to help Newman edge Nebraska Kearney, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in Wichita.
The Jets (1-10-1, 1-4-0) avenge a 2-1 double overtime loss to the Lopers (0-10-2, 0-4-1) last fall.
