UNK VOLLEYBALL BATTLES EMPORIA STATE AT HEALTH AND SPORTS CENTER:

After another successful weekend on the road, UNK Volleyball (19-2) returns home to defend the Health and Sports Center over the visiting Emporia State Hornets.

The Hornets are 4-16 on the year and amid a seven match losing streak. Their last win came against William Jewell in five sets on Sept. 20. Their last conference victory was in five sets over Fort Hays State on Sept. 10.

UNK downed Emporia in a sweep at Emporia on Sept. 9 in the Hornets home opener. First serve tonight is set for 6 PM.

LOPER BASKETBALL VOTED TO FINISH THIRD AND 12th IN CONFERENCE POLL:

The Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams have been picked to finish third/fourth (women) and 12th (men) in the 2022-23 MIAA preseason coaches’ and media polls.

Both polls were released in conjunction with “Media Day” in Kansas City. Head coaches from all 14 schools were in attendance along with a few student-athletes

On the women’s side, both polls had Missouri Southern State as the favorite with Fort Hays State second. The MSSU Lions were a surprise team last winter, going 24-7, and are led by 2022 MIAA Freshman and MIAA Player of the Year Lacy Stokes.

In the coaches’ poll (head coaches cannot vote for their own team), UNK tallied 144 points and two first place votes to trail the Lions (159; six) and the rival Tigers (151; three). The media poll had the Lopers trailing Central Missouri as well.

Three-time defending national champion Northwest Missouri State is number one on the men’s side with Central Oklahoma the definitive number two.

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL PRACTICE COMMENTS – MICKEY JOSEPH:

JOSEPH – INJURY RULE:

Interim Head Coach Mickey Joseph addressed the media on Tuesday after the Huskers’ practice and gave an injury update to the media…

Nebraska saw some banged up players leave New Jersey last week, including Casey Thompson who is nursing a sore shoulder.

JOSEPH – COMFORTABLE WITH NEXT MAN UP:

Nebraska Interim Head Coach Mickey Joseph spoke after Tuesday’s practice and was clear and confident about his team’s ability to respond to the “next man up” philosophy…

Nebraska continues to battle through injuries and roster changes as the Huskers face Purdue on the road this weekend.

JOSEPH – FINDING THE RIGHT FIVE FOR O-LINE:

Interim Head Coach for Nebraska Football said at his Tuesday press conference that the offensive line could still be a work in progress…

Nebraska will deal with injuries and a new rotation to aid in protecting Casey Thompson, who is still recovering from shoulder soreness from Indiana and Rutgers.

JOSEPH – TEAM HAS ADJUSTED TO PRACTICE SCHEDULE CHANGE:

Mickey Joseph, Nebraska Interim Head Coach, has adjusted the Huskers’ practice schedule since taking over for the Big Red back on September 11. Joseph adds that the schedule change has been good for the team…

Nebraska took Saturday off this past weekend to travel back from New Jersey after the Friday night Rutgers contest.

JOSEPH – TOMMI HILL POSITION CHANGE:

After spending the beginning of the season starting at cornerback, Tommi Hill has officially switched to the offensive side of the ball as a receiver for the Big Red offense. Interim Head Coach Mickey Joseph says it was all about keeping Hill on the field…

Hill has also made a number swap, now repping #2 after the decision by receiver Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda to enter the transfer portal.

JOSEPH – FOCUS IN A TOUGH “SELLOUT” ENVIRONMENT:

Mickey Joseph, Nebraska’s interim Head Coach, added in his Tuesday press conference he’s looking forward to seeing his team respond to a true road environment at Purdue…

Nebraska aims to take down their second straight road conference opponent after beating Rutgers on Friday night 14-13.

GARCIA-CASTANEDA HITS TRANSFER PORTAL:

Nebraska receiver Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda is entering the transfer portal and ending his career with the Huskers halfway through the 2022 season.

Garcia-Castaneda committed to the Huskers in December and enrolled in January, actually scoring the team’s first touchdown over in Ireland, while finishing with four catches for 120 yards. He would play sporadically after that with his last appearance coming in the Oklahoma game, where he finished with a catch but did not gain a yard. The receiver didn’t play in the last two games against Indiana or Rutgers.

Incidentally the move now does leave the Huskers in a little bit of a tighter situation at wide receiver where the team could be without Omar Manning because of injury. This season Trey Palmer has led Nebraska at the receiver spot with Marcus Washington and Oliver Martin as the ones behind him.

PURDUE COMMENTS ON HUSKERS – HEAD COACH JEFF BROHM:

BROHM – HUSKERS HAVE A GOOD OFFENSIVE MIX:

Purdue Head Coach Jeff Brohm gave high praise to the offensive balance of the Nebraska Football attack during his media comments on Monday…

Nebraska has settled as double digit point underdogs to the Boilermakers as the Big Red makes the trip to West Lafayette on Saturday night.

BROHM – SOME ADJUSTMENTS NEEDED FOR AN INTERIM COACH:

Nebraska Football continues to improve after the firing of head coach Scott Frost and naming Mickey Joseph as the interim. The Huskers’ opponent on Saturday – Purdue Head Coach Jeff Brohm – said that the interim position does require a few minor adjustments…

Nebraska travels to West Lafayette on a two game winning streak, including two consecutive contests where the Blackshirt defense has not allowed a score of any kind in the second half.

HUSKER BASEBALL ALUM JAKE MEYERS ADDED TO ASTROS’ ROSTER FOR ALDS:

Former Husker Jake Meyers has made the Houston Astros’ 26-man roster for the American League Divisional Series against the Seattle Mariners.

Meyers started the season on a rehab assignment with the Triple-A Sugar Land Space Cowboys, before he returned to the Astros in August. In 52 games with the Astros, he hit .227 at the plate with six doubles, two triples, a home run and 15 RBI

The former Husker played in the first four games of last season’s ALDS series against the White Sox, before a season-ending injury in game four shut him down for the remainder of the playoffs.

Meyers was drafted by the Astros in the 13th round (391st overall) of the 2017 MLB Draft. At the time of his MLB debut in 2021, he was the 37th Husker to play in the Majors.

HUSKERS’ RODRIGUEZ NAMED BIG TEN CO-DEFENSIVE POTW:

Nebraska sophomore libero Lexi Rodriguez was named Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Monday

Rodriguez averaged 6.00 digs per set in Nebraska’s sweeps at Michigan State and No. 24 Michigan last week. The Sterling, Ill., native had a season-high 25 assists in a sweep over the Wolverines on Saturday night. She also had a pair of aces and was perfect on 17 reception attempts. Against Michigan State last Thursday, Rodriguez recorded 11 digs and an ace with 15 perfect receptions.

Rodriguez earned her third career Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week award and the seventh overall Big Ten weekly honor of her career.

PANTHERS’ REMOVE RHULE AS HEAD COACH:

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper said he ran out of patience with Matt Rhule’s inability to get the franchise “over the hump.”

Tepper fired his second coach in four years on Monday, dismissing Rhule five games into his third losing season.

Rhule, the first NFL coach to be fired this season, went 11-27 with Carolina and leaves with roughly $40 million remaining on the seven-year, guaranteed $62 million contract he signed in 2020, when he made the jump from Baylor to the pros.

Rhule has now been rumored to head coaching openings in college football, including Nebraska and Wisconsin.

KELCE’S FOUR TOUCHDOWNS UPEND HOT START BY RAIDERS:

The Kansas City Chiefs headed off to the locker room facing a big hole against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night, everything from the big plays to the officiating calls going the way of their longtime AFC West rivals.

One call in particular lit a fire under them. It was a dubious penalty on Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones for roughing Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, and nobody in the Kansas City locker room could believe it. But rather than stew over it, or lament their 10-point deficit, Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs used it as motivation to storm from behind for the 30-29 victory.

The Chiefs’ were aided by tight end Travis Kelce’s big night, scoring four touchdowns.

The Chiefs host the Bills on Sunday in a rematch of January’s playoff overtime thriller.
