LOPER FOOTBALL SWARMED BY HORNETS:
The 32nd-ranked Emporia State Hornets totaled 553 yards of offense and forced seven punts to down No. 22/13 Nebraska Kearney, 44-21, Saturday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.
The fast-break Hornets (5-2) win a third game in a row to move into a four-way tie for second place in the MIAA standings. Earlier this fall, E-State missed a PAT and two field goals in a 14-13 loss to league leader Pittsburg State (7-0). UNK is also 5-2 but will need to win out and get some help in order to make the NCAA Division II playoffs for a second straight season.
The Lopers head to winless Lincoln University next Saturday in Jefferson City, Mo. The game kicks off at 2 p.m.
HUSKER VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS ANOTHER BIG TEN FOE:
The No. 3 Nebraska volleyball team took care of business with a 25-23, 25-16, 25-18 sweep of Northwestern on Sunday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in front of a crowd of 8,175.
The Huskers (16-1, 8-0 Big Ten) won their ninth match in a row and fourth by sweep, while Northwestern fell to 13-7 (2-6 Big Ten).
Nebraska used a balanced attack with five players recording at least six kills. Bekka Allick (.571), Madi Kubik (.304) and Whitney Lauenstein all had nine kills for the Huskers. Ally Batenhorst added eight kills and Lindsay Krause had six. Kaitlyn Hord chipped in five kills along with a team-high five blocks.
Northwestern hit .195 for the match and was led by 11 kills from Kathryn Randorf. Former Husker Megan Miller had 13 digs as the Wildcats’ libero.
The Huskers are back on the road for their next three matches, beginning Wednesday at 7 p.m. (CT) at No. 9 Purdue.
LOPER VOLLEYBALL IN FIRST PLACE AFTER NEWMAN SWEEP:
Outside hitter Emersen Cyza had 14 kills and eighth-ranked Nebraska Kearney had six aces to sweep Newman Saturday afternoon in Wichita.
The first-place Lopers improve to 22-22 (12-2) and win a fifth straight match while the Jets fall to 7-16 (2-11).
Cyza (Alliance), after a career-best 28 kills in a 3-2 win Friday at No. 19 Central Oklahoma, reached her total today in 35 swings (.286 pct.). She had five in the first, five more in the second and four in the third.
UNK hosts nationally-ranked Central Missouri next Friday night and Missouri Western on Saturday afternoon.

The LSU transfer had seven receptions for 237 yards – a school record – including a 60 yard rush on an end-around that allowed Palmer to lead the Huskers’ in two offensive categories on the night.
STORM DROP HOME OPENER AGAINST LINCOLN:
The Tri-City Storm dropped the team’s annual Home Opener at the Viaero Center by a final score of 6-3 to the Lincoln Stars on Saturday night. Tanner Adams, Graham Gamache, and Phillippe Blais-Savoie each netted a goal in Tri-City’s loss.
The Storm will return to action next week with back-to-back road games on Thursday and Friday against the Fargo Force and Sioux City Musketeers. Tri-City’s next home game at the Viaero Center will take place on Saturday, October 29th, in a rematch of tonight’s battle with the Lincoln Stars.
UNK SOCCER DROPS HOME FINALE:
The Missouri Southern State Lions headed in a corner to defeat Nebraska Kearney, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.
This was the home finale for the Lopers with nine seniors being honored after the game.
The Lopers finish up the season next weekend with games at Fort Hays State and Emporia State.
