FORMER HUSKER BETTS ARRESTED IN SARPY COUNTY:

Former Nebraska wide receiver Zavier Betts was arrested early Sunday morning in Sarpy County.

According to authorities, Betts was stopped for speeding around 1:30 a.m. by the La Vista Police Department.

The former Husker had a misdemeanor warrant in Iowa for possession of a controlled substance, according to law enforcement. He was issued a citation but did not show up for his court date.

In March, then-Husker football coach Scott Frost said Betts was “not a member of the team.”

HUSKERS’ ALLICK NAMED BIG TEN FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK:

Nebraska middle blocker Bekka Allick was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week

Allick averaged 2.50 kills per set and 1.33 blocks per set in Nebraska’s sweeps of No. 14 Penn State and Northwestern over the weekend. She also had a team-high .481 attacking percentage with 15 kills on 27 swings with just two errors.

Against Penn State, Allick had six kills and six blocks and hit .385 in the 3-0 victory. She followed on Sunday by matching her season high with nine kills on .571 hitting to go with two blocks against Northwestern.

Allick’s award is the second Big Ten weekly honor of the season for the Huskers. Lexi Rodriguez was named Co-Defensive Player of the Week last Monday.

LOPER VOLLEYBALL’S CYZA EARNS MIAA HONOR:

The MIAA has announced its eighth Volleyball Athletes of the Week for the 2022 season. Nebraska Kearney’s Emersen Cyza was selected as the offensive athlete of the week.

Cyza averaged 4.55 kills per set and hit .374 as No. 8-ranked UNK won three matches last week to move into sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings. Cyza had a career-high 28 kills, three shy of tying the school mark, in a 3-2 win at No. 19 Central Oklahoma.

The Wyoming transfer reached that tally in just 50 swings for a .500 hitting percentage. She then went for a team-best 14 kills in the Lopers sweep in Wichita.

HUSKER FOOTBALL ANNOUNCES AFTERNOON KICKOFF FOR ILLINOIS:

The Big Ten Conference announced on Monday morning that Nebraska’s Oct. 29 home game against Illinois will kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT.

The game will be televised on either ABC or ESPN with the network determined following this Saturday’s games.

The Huskers can be heard on KGFW and KQKY/HITS 106.

NORTH CAROLINA RATED No. 1 IN PRESEASON TOP 25 POLL:

North Carolina surprised just about everyone last year when a talented team led by first-year coach Hubert Davis parlayed a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament into a run to the national title game.

The Tar Heels won’t be sneaking up on anyone this year.

With four starters back from the team that lost to Kansas in New Orleans, the Tar Heels are the runaway pick as the preseason No. 1 in the AP Top 25 released Monday. They earned 47 of 62 first-place votes from a national media panel to easily outdistance Gonzaga, the top preseason team the past two years.

BRONCOS FALTER AGAIN IN PRIMETIME:

Justin Herbert didn’t throw a touchdown pass for the first time in 27 games. For once, it didn’t matter thanks to the Los Angeles Chargers special teams.

Dustin Hopkins kicked four field goals, including a 39-yarder with 2:38 remaining in overtime, as the Chargers rallied for a 19-16 victory over the Denver Broncos.

Hopkins’ heroics were set up when Deane Leonard recovered a muffed punt at the Denver 28-yard line.

The Chargers have won three straight to improve to 4-2. They are tied with Kansas City atop the AFC West.

Russell Wilson was 15 of 28 for 188 yards and a touchdown for the Broncos (2-4), who dropped a game in overtime for the second straight week.

YANKEES/GUARDIANS POSTPONED AGAIN; GAME 5 ASSIGNED TO TONIGHT:

After fans waited through a 2 1/2-hour rain delay, Major League Baseball postponed the decisive Game 5 of the AL Division Series between Cleveland and New York — and the Yankees announced Nestor Cortes will start on short rest Tuesday against the Guardians.

Cleveland was expected to stay with Aaron Civale for the game, which was rescheduled for 4:07 p.m.

The game was scheduled to start at 7:07 p.m., and the postponement was announced at 9:38 p.m.

The winner will have a short turnaround, traveling to Houston to face the Astros in the AL Championship Series starting Wednesday at 6:37 p.m. CDT.
