KEARNEY FOOTBALL WRAPS UP REGULAR SEASON HEADING TO NORFOLK:
The Kearney Bearcats are locked in and ready for the Class A Playoffs to begin next week, but before trotting into the postseason the Bearcats must face the Norfolk Panthers on the road to close out the regular season.
Kearney sits at #5 in Class A PowerPoints coming into tonight’s matchup, while Norfolk appears to be just inside the playoff picture as well. A win cements a Kearney home contest in the first round of the playoffs, while a win by Norfolk would jolt them into a better matchup than facing one of the top four seeds.
Kickoff from Norfolk’s Memorial Field is set for 7 PM with the High School Football Preview Show beginning pregame coverage at 6 PM. Live pregame from Norfolk starts at 6:30 PM with Austin Jacobsen and Ford Clark on the call.
Tune in to coverage on 1340 KGFW, 96.1 FM, on the free KGFW mobile app, and online at KGFW.com.
LOPER VOLLEYBALL BATTLE UCM AT HEALTH AND SPORTS CENTER:
The UNK Volleyball team aims to keep their No. 1 spot in the MIAA Standings this weekend, starting with a tough matchup against No. 26 Central Missouri.
The Jennies fell to the Lopers back on Sept. 24 in Warrensburg, as UNK took a five set thriller. The Lopers would like to sweep the Jennies tonight as first serve is set for 6 PM.
UNK continues their homestand on Saturday facing Missouri Western State at 2 PM.
STATE CROSS COUNTRY KICKS OFF TODAY:
The 2022 Nebraska State Cross Country meet returns to Kearney today for runners across the state to compete.
Racing begins at the Kearney Country Club today at Noon with the Class D Boys followed by the Class C Boys. Class D and C girls will follow, respectively.
At 2:30 PM Class B Boys begin the afternoon races with Class A Boys at 3 PM, Class B girls at 3:30 PM, and the Class A Girls at 4 PM.
The Kearney High Girls Cross Country team won the A-4 District qualifying the Bearcats team.
STORM SHUT OUT IN ROAD LOSS TO FORCE:
The Tri-City Storm dropped a road game to the Fargo Force by a final score of 4-0 Thursday night at Scheels Arena. The team will return to action tomorrow in a road game against the Sioux City Musketeers.
The lone goal of Thursday’s 1st period was scored on the powerplay by Fargo’s Verner Miettinen. The goal was his first of the game, and second of the season. Joe Palodichuk and Jakob Stender each notched an assist on the scoring play. Fargo outshot Tri-City by a 10-7 margin in the 1st period.
OLE MISS VOLLEYBALL UNDER REVIEW; FORMER HUSKER BANWARTH PLACED ON LEAVE:
Ole Miss athletics has announced that volleyball coach and former Husker player and assistant Kayla Banwarth is being placed on leave and her program will be placed under administrative review on Thursday night.
Assistant Bre Henry is the acting head coach during the review of the program.
Banwarth is in her third season as the Rebels volleyball coach. She led the Rebels to a postseason appearance in 2021-22, the program’s first in 11 seasons. The Rebels are 7-10 this year midway through the regular season. Ole Miss volleyball hosts Missouri for a pair of matches in Oxford this weekend.
ASTROS BIG HIT ALLOWS HOUSTON TO CONTINUE WINS AGAINST YANKEES:
Alex Bregman, Framber Valdez and the Houston Astros are off to a perfect start this postseason.
Taking the formula that won them 106 games in the regular season — strong pitching and hitting home runs — the Astros kept rolling against the New York Yankees.
Bregman connected for an early three-run homer, Valdez threw seven strong innings and the Astros edged the Yankees 3-2 Thursday night to take a 2-0 lead in the AL Championship Series.
The Astros improved to 5-0 this postseason after a sweep to begin this best-of-seven matchup.
The series shifts to New York for Game 3 Saturday where the Yankees will try to dig themselves out of a hole to avoid being eliminated by Houston in the ALCS for the third time in six years.
CMC TRADED FROM PANTHERS FOR BOATLOAD OF PICKS:
The Carolina Panthers traded McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers for a boatload of draft picks late Thursday night.
It won’t come cheap. The 49ers are giving up four picks to the Panthers, though no first-rounder.
The 49ers were thin at running back after losing Elijah Mitchell to an injury in Week 1. Jeff Wilson Jr. did a solid job replacing Mitchell, but McCaffrey will add an entirely new element to the 49ers’ offense.
McCaffrey was a star at nearby Stanford. He was the eighth pick of the 2017 NFL draft. McCaffrey led the NFL with 2,392 yards from scrimmage and 19 total touchdowns in 2019. He became one of the best all-around talents at the position. He caught 223 passes out of the backfield in 2018 and 2019 combined.
