The Nebraska Department of Agriculture has confirmed another case of the highly contagious avian influenza in the state.

The case stems from a commercial flock of gamebirds in York County.

According to the NDA, this case marks as the 12th case of the year in Nebraska for avian flu.

NDA State Veterinarian Dr. Roger Dudley stated the flock was humanely depopulated and disposed of and a 6.2-mile control zone was established.

Avian influenza is highly contagious among birds through nasal and eye secretions, as well as manure.

Symptoms include: a decrease in water consumption, decreased egg production or soft-shelled, misshapen eggs; nasal discharge, coughing,
sneezing; incoordination; and diarrhea.

HPAI can also cause sudden death in birds even if they aren’t showing any other symptoms. HPAI can survive for weeks in contaminated environments.

Bird owners should prevent contact between their birds and wildlife and practice strict biosecurity measures.

Producers that suspect symptoms should call 402-471-2351. More information can be found at nda.nebraka.gov
