It is National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week which runs from October 23 thru October 29.
The week is intended to raise awareness, work to reduce risks of exposure of lead to children and prevent serious harmful effects.
Parents, caregivers, and communities can best reduce risks by getting their kids and homes tested.
The Department of Health and Human services reports that sources of lead can come from:
- Paint chips in homes or buildings built before 1978
- Water in lead pipes
- Certain jobs or hobbies
- Soil around homes that contain lead-based paint
- Some imported foods and products
