NEBRASKA MEN’S HOOPS HEAD TO QUEENS FOR St. JOHN’S MATCHUP:

Nebraska looks to remain perfect on the season, as the Huskers travel to Queens, N.Y. for a matchup with the St. John’s Red Storm.

The game is part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games, which features eight matchups between the Big Ten and the Big East throughout the week in honor of Hall of Famer Dave Gavitt, founder of the Big East and basketball visionary.

The Huskers (2-0) are coming off a 75-61 win over Omaha last Thursday. Nebraska’s strength in the first two games is a balanced attack, as the Huskers are averaging 77.0 points per game and have three players averaging double figures through the first two games.

St. Johns is 3-0 on the season following a 91-74 win over Central Connecticut on Tuesday evening. The Red Storm have been led by DePaul transfer David Jones, who is averaging 18.7 points on 49 percent shooting and 8.0 rebounds per game.

Pregame begins at 4:30 PM on KGFW.

LOPER WOMEN RENEW RIVALRY WITH CHADRON STATE:

After back-to-back wins at home last weekend, the 3-1 Loper Women’s Basketball team heads to Chadron to renew their old RMAC rivalry with the Eagles.

UNK dominated last year’s matchup at the Health and Sports Center, putting away Chadron early leading 22-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Lopers are currently on a seven game winning streak over Chadron, as the last loss in Chadron in the series was back in 2010.

Chadron State is currently 0-3 on the season, recently falling to Wayne State at home on Wednesday night 84-71. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM tonight.

ALBERTS REQUESTS PATIENCE IN HUSKERS FOOTBALL SEARCH:

Husker athletics director Trev Alberts thanked fans for their patience on Wednesday’s Sports Nightly, requesting just a little more for a coaching search he believes is on track.

Alberts added that he was pleased with the process and amount of data that has been accumulated. Asked if he has a date set that he has to get the coach announced by, Alberts said he doesn’t have a particular one but is also keeping in mind the early signing period and the date the transfer portal gets opened back up – Dec. 5.

As the Huskers search for their next permanent head coach, Alberts expressed his appreciation for the man currently in the interim role, Mickey Joseph.

THOMPSON LIKELY TO PLAY; MICKEY JOSEPH SPORTS NIGHTLY COMMENTS:

It sounds like Casey Thompson will be back in action on Saturday. It’s at least tracking that way.

Mickey Joseph spoke about his quarterbacks during his hour on Sports Nightly Wednesday, stating that Thompson had again practiced for the second day and appeared that Casey was ready to go.

Joseph reiterated that Logan Smothers has had to battle through injuries for a while now.

The Huskers have scored just 16 points total since Thompson’s injury 2 1/2 games ago against Illinois, a nerve injury that made it difficult for him to grip a football.

HUSKER FOOTBALL PRACTICE COMMENTS – COORDINATORS:

WHIPPLE – ADVANTAGES TO CALLING PLAYS IN BOOTH:

Nebraska Offensive Coordinator Mark Whipple spoke to the media on Wednesday appearing in a walking boot after taking a nasty hit on the sideline at Michigan last Saturday. Whipple will call plays from the booth, and spoke on some advantages that perspective has…

It will be the first time Whipple has called a game for the Huskers not from the sideline, as he did call plays from the booth in the second half at Michigan.

WHIPPLE – CASEY IS IMPORTANT; QUARTERBACK UPDATES:

Mark Whipple, Nebraska Offensive Coordinator, spoke on the importance of Casey Thompson and gave a quarterback update after Wednesday’s practice…

Nebraska lost Purdy to a high ankle sprain in the Michigan game, as Hastings native Jarrett Synek has now been elevated to the No. 3 spot on the depth chart.

WHIPPLE – QUARTERBACKS NEED FIRST TEAM REPS:

Husker Football Offensive Coordinator Mark Whipple spoke to the media after Wednesday’s practice and touched on the importance of his quarterbacks taking first team reps…

Nebraska has played two different quarterbacks in rotation since Casey Thompson’s injury in the Illinois contest three weeks ago.

BUSCH – WISCONSIN OFFENSE PREVIEW:

Nebraska’s interim defensive coordinator Bill Busch addressed the media after Wednesday’s practice and spoke on what the Huskers defense is expecting when facing Wisconsin…

Nebraska is hoping to slow down another strong running attack, and Busch added it will be a war within the trenches for another week.

BUSCH – ALLEN DIFFERENT STYLE OF BIG TEN BACK:

The Huskers defense has been playing some of the top running backs in the conference in consecutive weeks, beginning with Illinois’ Chase Brown, followed by Minnesota’s Mohammed Ibrahim, then last week Michigan’s Blake Corum. This week, it is Wisconsin’s Braelon Allen, whom Bill Busch previewed after Wednesday’s practice…

Nebraska has been gashed repeatedly since the Purdue game in the running game, as the Huskers are one of the worst run stopping defenses statistically in the conference.

BUSCH – TURNOVERS ARE KEY AGAINST WISCONSIN:

Nebraska interim defensive coordinator Bill Busch stressed turnovers during Wednesday’s practice when preparing for the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday…

Nebraska is aiming for more turnovers than in recent weeks, and is hoping to get their opportunities against the Badgers who have another stout run game led by Braelon Allen.
