The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating a fatality crash that occurred in York County last week. At around 7:40 am, a trooper observed a Jeep driving on the shoulder of Interstate 80 and following another vehicle too closely.
The trooper initiated a traffic stop but the suspect fled, accelerating to speeds over 100 miles per hour. After several miles, the jeep exited I-80 and began traveling on county roads south of the interstate. Moments later, the vehicle crashed into a bridge guardrail, with both passengers being ejected.
Passenger Melissa Hernandez, 30, of North Platte was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver, Christopher Brewer,30, also of North Platte, was not seriously injured and was taken into custody.
Brewer was charged with motor vehicle homicide, flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving (2nd offense) possession of methamphetamine, and numerous other charges.
