It’s the holiday season, and shopping is going to be non-stop for many consumers looking for the perfect gifts for their loved ones.

According to PwC consumers will spend an average of $1,430 on gifts, travel and entertainment this year.

Additionally, many sales and deals will be going on for online retailers this year, and among them will also scams parodying as legitimate businesses.

The best ways to avoid and detect online scams include:

  • Shop with a credit card
  • Beware of deals too good to be true
  • Verify the site is safe, if a site has HTTPS in the URL it is secure
  • If asked to pay with gift cards, it’s likely a scam
  • Research the business and check reviews before purchasing

Those opting for in-person shopping should still take precautions to avoid theft.

  • Keep wallets/purse on person, not in shopping cart.
  • Ensure vehicle is locked, and gifts are hidden when going store to store
  • Do not leave gifts or precious items overnight in car
  • Be aware of surroundings, and shop during daylight hours

So, stay alert and stay safe this holiday shopping season. If a theft does occur call the local law enforcement non-emergency line. The Kearney Police Department can be reached at 308-237-2104.
