HUSKER MEN FALL IN CONTROVERSIAL OVERTIME TO PURDUE:

Nebraska overcame a 14-point second-half deficit against No. 4 Purdue, but the Boilermakers held off the Huskers in overtime for a 65-62 victory on Saturday afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Purdue led 45-31 with 15 minutes left, before Nebraska sprinted out to a 10-0 run, including seven points from Keisei Tominaga to trim the lead to four at 45-41. NU kept chipping away, tying the score at 56 on a 3-pointer from Tominaga with nine seconds left.

Nebraska, which never led in regulation, took a pair of leads in overtime, the last at 60-59 on a Derrick Walker basket with 1:49 remaining.

Nebraska was within 63-62 after Tominaga’s layup with 14 seconds left, and looked like they had forced a turnover when Braden Smith lost the ball near midcourt, but the official on the baseline called a foul on C.J. Wilcher with 12 seconds left, and Smith made both free throws to stretch the lead to three.

The Huskers fall to 6-5 on the year and 0-2 in the Big Ten. The Huskers hit the road next to take on Kansas State at T-Mobile Arena in Kansas City, Mo. on Saturday, Dec. 17. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

LOPER WOMEN TAKE DOWN BEARCATS WITH McCOOL’S CAREER DAY:

Redshirt junior forward Shiloh McCool scored a season-high 23 points as No. 22/24 Nebraska Kearney dominated Northwest Missouri State, 77-51, Saturday afternoon in Maryville.

The Lopers (10-2, 3-1) bounce back from a Thursday night setback while the Bearcats fall to 4-4 (0-3) and drop a seventh straight to UNK.

Besting the 21 points she tallied in a 2019 win at Lindenwood, McCool made 8 of 15 shots and went 7 of 9 at the line. Brooke Carlson added 14 while senior forward Elisa Backes had 10.

The Lopers return home next Friday night (Newman) and Sunday afternoon (Central Oklahoma). The change in schedule is due to Winter Commencement.

Four Loper starters scored in double digits, led by Utah super senior forward Darrian Nebeker (17) and Colorado sophomore guard Sean Evans (15).

UNK hosts Newman (Friday) and nationally-ranked Central Oklahoma (Sunday) next weekend. The change in schedule is due to Winter Graduation.

HUSKER WOMEN’S HOOPS HAVE BIG SECOND HALF OVER SAMFORD:

Sophomores Alexis Markowski and Allison Weidner both produced double-doubles, as Nebraska used a huge second half on its way to a 71-46 women’s basketball win over Samford at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Saturday night.

Markowski put up game highs of 16 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots to power the Huskers inside, while Weidner, a 5-10 guard from Humphrey, Neb., added 15 points and 11 boards to go along with a game-high five steals.

Jaz Shelley added 15 points and a game-high six assists, including 10 points in the fourth quarter

The Huskers are now 8-3 on the year and 2-0 in conference play, as Nebraska will take Finals Week off from competition before returning to Pinnacle Bank Arena to host Wyoming on Sunday, Dec. 18.
