LOPER MEN’S CONTEST WITH GRIFFONS RESCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY:
The Nebraska Kearney and Missouri Western State men’s basketball teams will meet on Monday, February 27, in St. Joseph to make-up a game that was recently postponed.
The Lopers and Griffons will play at 2 p.m. on the 27th, two days after the end of the regular season. The MIAA Tournament is set to begin on Wednesday, March 1st, in Kansas City. UNK hosts Fort Hays State on February 25th.
Due to COVID protocols on the MWSU campus the Dec. 8 game in St. Joe was postponed, as was the Griffons game vs. Fort Hays on Dec. 10. UNK hosts MWSU on January 28th in a regularly scheduled contest.
NEBRASKA NATIVE LEADS LOUISVILLE TO VOLLEYBALL TITLE GAME TILT WITH TEXAS:
The Texas Longhorns women’s volleyball team is in familiar territory: back in the NCAA championship match. Meanwhile, their opponent in Saturday’s final, the Louisville Cardinals, will be there for the first time, as will the ACC as a league.
Texas, the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament, beat the San Diego Toreros 3-1 on Thursday, which was followed by the Cardinals’ 3-2 win over their conference rival, the Pittsburgh Panthers.
Dani Busboom-Kelly, a Cortland, Neb. native, alum of Freeman High School in Southeast Nebraska, and former Nebraska Volleyball star from the 2006 Nebraska National Championship roster, leads the Louisville program into their first championship match.
Saturday will be the Longhorns’ eighth appearance in the NCAA title match, which ties them with UCLA for the fourth most. Only Stanford (17), Penn State (10) and Nebraska (10) have played for the NCAA championship more.
STORM SET FOR FINAL WEEKEND BEFORE BREAK:
The Tri-City Storm is set for the team’s final weekend series prior to the upcoming holiday break.
The Storm will battle the Lincoln Stars on the road at the Ice Box tonight before returning home to the Viaero Center for tomorrow night’s annual Teddy Bear Toss at the Viaero Center.
Following the holiday break. Tri-City will host Lincoln in Kearney for a New Year’s Eve matchup on December 31st.
Puck drop for tonight’s road game is set for 7:05pm CT.
COLUMBUS NATIVE HAUMANN TRANSFERS TO ANN ARBOR:
Michigan added another potential starter to its roster in former Nebraska linebacker Ernest Hausmann.
The 6-2, 220-pound Columbus, Neb. native Hausmann earned immediate playing time as a true freshman, playing in every game with seven starts. He finished his freshman season with 54 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack and one fumble recovery.
He had a big game at No. 3 Michigan, finishing with 10 tackles, including a three-yard sack for his first career sack. He topped that effort with a career-high 12 tackles the next week against Wisconsin.
Haumann will make his return to Memorial Stadium facing his former team on September 30, 2023.
FORMER LOPER SWANSON ADDED TO AP ALL-AMERICAN TEAM:
Nebraska Kearney redshirt senior strong safety Darius Swanson has made the Associated Press (AP) 2022 Division II All-American team.
Swanson (Aurora, Colo.) makes the first-team and is the first Loper to garner AP honors since tackle monster Tyke Kozeal in 2016. He is the 13th Loper since 1973, and the third defensive player, to be named an AP All-American.
Swanson will use his COVID year to transfer to Division 1 Tulane for his final year of eligibility.
PURDY GOOD; 49ers WIN NFC WEST WITH THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL:
Rookie quarterback Brock Purdy never doubted he’d take the field for the 49ers with a chance at winning a division title.
Purdy threw a pair of touchdown passes to George Kittle, and the 49ers won their first NFC West title since 2019, beating the Seattle Seahawks 21-13 on Thursday night.
Despite using their third starting quarterback this season, the 49ers (10-4) continued to show they might be the class of the NFC alongside Philadelphia. San Francisco won its seventh straight, using its stifling defense to frustrate Seattle into countless mistakes.
Seattle (7-7) lost for the fourth time in five games and its playoff hopes took another hit.
NEBRASKA MEN HEAD TO KANSAS CITY TO FACE WILDCATS:
Following a week off for final exams, Nebraska will get another non-conference test Saturday evening, as the Huskers travel to Kansas City for a matchup with the Kansas State Wildcats. Tipoff from the T-Mobile Center is slated for 6 p.m. and the game will be available online on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and on the Huskers Radio Network
Nebraska (6-5) looks to bounce back after a heart-breaking 65-62 overtime loss to now No. 1 Purdue last Saturday.
Kansas State (9-1) has enjoyed a surprising start under first-year coach Jermone Tang, who took over the program in April. The Wildcats, who are off to their best start in over a decade, bring a three-game win streak to Kansas City following a 98-50 win over Incarnate Word on Sunday
HUSKER WOMEN CLASH WITH WYOMING ON SUNDAY:
The Nebraska women’s basketball team returns to Pinnacle Bank Arena to take on Wyoming in a key non-conference clash on Sunday afternoon.
Tip-off between the Huskers (8-3, 2-0 Big Ten) and Cowgirls (6-3, 0-0 Mountain West) is set for 2 p.m. (CT) in Lincoln.
Nebraska opened its five-game home stand with back-to-back wins over Wisconsin (82-54) and Samford (71-46) before taking Finals Week off from competition.
The Huskers, who will be shooting for home win No. 500 in program history, are 5-0 at Pinnacle Bank Arena this season with all five wins by double digits. Nebraska has won 22 of its last 23 at PBA with 21 wins by double figures, including last year’s 72-61 win over Wyoming (Dec. 22, 2021).
Coach Heather Ezell brings the Wyoming Cowgirls to Lincoln with a 6-3 record while riding a four-game winning streak.
