Nance County Sheriff’s Office and several agencies responded to a fatal fiery crash that killed one person in rural Nance County Tuesday.

According to a press release from the Nance County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 5:55 pm on Tuesday, January 17, the sheriff’s office responded to a two vehicle accident on Highway 22 near N. 370th Ave. in rural Nance County.

An investigation of the incident showed that a westbound Chevrolet Suburban traveling on Highway 22 at an unknown speed had struck the rear end of a piece of farm equipment that was also traveling westbound. The Suburban received extensive damage from the accident and had caught fire. Witnesses attempted to remove the driver who was trapped inside the Suburban, but could not free him due to the fire, which quickly engulfed the vehicle.

Once fire crews arrived on scene they were able to put out the fire. However, the driver died from his injuries before first responders arrived. Deputies identified the driver and have notified the family.

The driver of the farm equipment was transported to the Columbus Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

A re-constructionist from the Nebraska State Patrol has been requested to assist in accident. The Sheriff’s Office and NSP are still investigating a cause.

Additional agencies that provided assistance in the incident include the Genoa Volunteer Rescue Squad, Genoa Volunteer Fire Department, Fullerton Volunteer Fire Department, Smith and Sons Towing and the Nebraska State Patrol for their assistance in responding to and investigating this tragic incident.
